Special Olympics Sackville-Bedford is dedicated to enriching the lives of persons with an intellectual disability – through sport. We are a not-for-profit, grassroots organization that provides sport training and competition opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities.

Spencer House is a unique program and community drop-in centre for older adults, located in the heart of historic Schmidtville, near the corner of Morris and Queen Streets. We offer programs and services to bring seniors together, reduce isolation and help them remain involved and living independently in their community for longer.

The Spencer House Seniors Community Centre is for seniors over 50. The Centre's goal is to provide the services and programs which enable older adults to live independently, contribute to their community and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. The Centre is open Monday to Friday and offers a hot meal and various programs for seniors. Our History Spencer House Seniors’ Centre was officially opened on June 23, 1983 by its two founding members Doreen Fraser and Ida Zifkin. Our centre is named after the late Lady Diana Spencer. After a visit by Prince Charles and Princess Diana to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1983, it was decided that the new organization would be named after the Princess in tribute to the Royal Visit and to express the admiration and affection of the seniors towards the Princess. The seniors wrote to Earl Spencer, Diana’s father, and received permission to use the family name for the new centre. Our Vision Our goal is to provide the services and programs which enable older adults to live independently, contribute to their community and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

For over a century, St. John Ambulance Canada volunteers have been dedicated to a singular vision: to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing community services and first aid training. St. John Ambulance is looking for dedicated volunteers to join or medical response division in Halifax.  We are a nonprofit organization and provide first aid care around the city.  Ever take a first aid course and forget it months later?  Joining St. John Ambulance would allow you to hone your first aid skills year round and apply them to real situations.  You can be part of one of Canad's oldest volunteer organizations and provide an essential service to your community.

Our mission at St. John Ambulance is to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing training and community service. Some of our community service programs include: Therapy Dog, Volunteer Medical Responders, LifeSmart, and our Car Seat program. In addition to Standard and Emergency First Aid we offer a number of specialized courses including: Defensive Driving, Pet First Aid, Babysitting, Home Alone, Marine First Aid, Emergency Child Care, Wilderness First Aid, and more.

StART is a local organization that supports emerging artists of all disciplines. Based out of K’jipuktuk / Halifax, Nova Scotia, StArt works to encourage and empower artists with the skills, networks, and resolve necessary to pursue their chosen vocation. We run an annual festival and mentorship program: Now entering its fourth year, the StART Festival is a multidisciplinary festival of emerging artists based out of the Bus Stop Theatre in K’jipuktuk / Halifax, Nova Scotia. With two days of performances and art installations, featuring upwards of fifteen artists, the festival creates a hub of activity that allows emerging artists to connect with engaged audiences.   The StART Mentorship Program is designed to empower emerging artists by providing them a supported platform to make art, fostering professional development, and creating opportunities to connect with mentors. The Mentorship serves emerging to mid-career artist who are trying to enter the professional realm. We would like to acknowledge that our festival and programming takes place in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

Start2Finish’s mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support to Canada’s at risk children throughout their school years, nurturing mind, body and social health so they are empowered to succeed and become role models for change. The Start2Finish Running & Reading Club is an innovative after-school program that effectively addresses the need for enhanced physical activity, literacy, and mentorship. The program targets elementary school aged children, grades 1-6, operating directly within schools once per week for 2 hours, from October to May.

Start2Finish’s mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support to Canada’s at risk children throughout their school years, nurturing mind, body and social health so they are empowered to succeed and become role models for change. Our work as a vehicle to help students succeed. For the last 20+ years, what has driven us is the desire to make Canada one of the best places to raise a child. Our work targets three outcomes for school-aged students living on the margins: increased physical activity and develops social-emotional agencies, aid in reaching and maintaining literacy skills and develop skills and agencies that contribute to success in high school. Achieving these outcomes is the key to making our ambitious vision of success for all Canadian children a reality.
