The Back to the Sea Society is a charity dedicated to sparking curiosity for local marine life off the coast of Nova Scotia (Mi'kma'ki), and to fostering a desire to protect our oceans. Here at Back to the Sea, we operate the Touch Tank Hut, a community aquarium on the Dartmouth waterfront, along with other occasional events to promote aquatic life and its conservation.
To get to know our oceans and the life within it, we need to have the opportunity to see it at eye level, ask questions, get curious, be compelled to care, and inspired to make sustainable choices. We do this at the Touch Tank Hut by displaying only smaller, local, shallow-dwelling animals, with a focus on hands-on learning. We follow a catch-and-release philosophy, where all animals collected are released back into the ocean in the fall.
Dartmouth Housing is a not-for-profit provider of affordable housing established in 1982. The majority of our properties are 3 or 4 bedroom duplexes, all within Dartmouth. The organization was established to fill the housing demand for families that did not have sufficient earned income to obtain decent, adequate and safe living accommodations.
Our mandate is to provide safe, affordable housing for low and middle income working families.
The Mobile Food Market brings healthy, affordable, high quality foods to Halifax neighbourhoods with limited access.
The Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo started with a drumbeat and the skirl of the pipes on June 28, 1979. First held to celebrate the International Gathering of the Clans (and opened by The Queen Mother) the Tattoo quickly became a beloved event on the summer calendar and has evolved into a week-long spectacle proudly supported by the Canadian Armed Forces, the Government of Canada, the Province of Nova Scotia, the City of Halifax, and many corporate partners.
This two-and-a-half-hour show features the best of the best pipes, drums, bands, dancers, singers, choirs, acrobats, military pomp and historical displays anywhere in Atlantic Canada. There’s something for everyone at the Tattoo!
Aside from being a part of one of the most exciting summer events in Halifax, you will come away with a sense of pride and patriotism by having contributed to the success of this world-renowned event. You will meet people from many different countries and no doubt make many new friends.
The RCMP Veterans Association is a national non profit organization with branches in each province. Nova Scotia is the largest in Canada with over 900 members. Membership is made up of serving and retired members of the RCMP, RCMP civilian staff and family members. It is a social group but mostly a support group that helps each other out and the community. The skills the organization spans all aspects of the RCMP, which expertise in many areas.
We are a non-profit that produces Comedy Festivals across Canada and we planning to add an East Coast Comedy Festival to our other 2 Festivals in Ottawa and the Arctic
The 7th Step Society is first and foremost a peer support group. It is designed to help support formerly incarcerated individuals successfully transition out of institutions and into society at large. We do this by helping those formerly incarcerated change their self-identity, by changing their thoughts and behaviors so they no longer see themselves as criminals. New members can use the success of long-standing members as a model for their own recovery. Formerly incarcerated individuals who have adapted their behavior are a source of motivation for new members looking for inspiration. These older members illuminate a road to recovery.
A key difference of 7th Step from other peer support groups is the presence of volunteer members. The volunteer role is to assist formerly incarcerated individuals with their recovery and reintegration. This can be done in a variety of ways from informal problem solving, connection building and emotional support.
