Back to Our Roots Urban Farm is a new, exciting venture on the Nova Scotia Hospital Site in Dartmouth. It is similar to the Common Roots Urban Farm in Halifax on Robie Street. There will be multiple parts of the farm, including a community garden, a market garden, and commons area. The area will also be used for recreation therapy.
The Nova Scotia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty (Nova Scotia SPCA): Protecting animals from cruelty since 1877, the Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity, comprised of a network of Branches, which rely primarily on volunteers and donations to fund animal protection; care and rehabilitation; advocacy; and humane education.The Act to Protect Animals and Aid Animals in Distress mandates the Society to enforce animal cruelty laws, making the Nova Scotia SPCA unique among animal welfare organizations in the province. The Nova Scotia SPCA also the distinction of being founded in the first place in North America to pass laws for the prevention of cruelty to animals.
The Nova Scotia Nature Trust is a conservation land trust. We work to protect private land in Nova Scotia. We are an incorporated charitable organization and are designated as a conservation organization under the Conservation Easement Act of Nova Scotia.
The Nature Trust is operated by a skilled professional staff under the guidance of a volunteer Board of Directors. Our work could not be done without the dedicated support of many donors, volunteers, strong province-wide community support and cooperation from local landowners and land stewards. In Nova Scotia Habitat for Humanity provides Affordable homeownership opportunities for low income working Nova Scotia families. With the help of volunteer builders, sponsor money and donor materials we construct energy efficient affordable homes for purchase by low income families. It is part of our mandate to provide educational opportunities on home maintenance and budgeting for homeownership.
Camp Courage is an empowering, life changing, award winning, one of a kind, free camp for young women. It is a registered charity that introduces women aged 15-19 to careers as first responders. Camp Courage provides information, inspiration and education, as well as, opportunities to experience the physical demands placed on a police officer, firefighter and paramedic. The ultimate goal is that the young women leave with a sense of empowerment and increased confidence to believe that they can achieve any goal, career or dream that they desire.
The camp is 100% free. The selection process includes writing an essay on how to improve someone else’s life that is less fortunate or on how to improve their community. Instead of paying cash, the young lady must do what she described in her essay.

Affirmative Ventures Association is an innovative, non-profit, organization that helps mental health consumers, and people with disabilities, achieve economic independence in the province of Nova Scotia.
We have a successful track record of creating social enterprises that generate employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, helping them grow personally and professionally. We also provide housing opportunities through our growing number of housing units. The outcome of the joint efforts from employment and housing is to see participants of our programs achieve independence.
The Dartmouth Makers are a non-profit, volunteer driven society of artists and craftspeople with an aim to foster a vibrant Dartmouth arts community. Their vision is to create affordable craft shows where artists, crafters and makers alike can market and sell their work.

S.T.A.R. (Share the Art of Reading) is a new program directed by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Halifax (Dartmouth North) site. It is a joint project of the Dartmouth North Association, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Halifax School Board and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Halifax. S.T.A.R. is a play-based tutoring program designed to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of the students in Primary-Grade 3 at the Harbour View Elementary School. It operates during the noon hour on Wednesdays and Fridays as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays after school
