The Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre (H&R MFRC) is proud to be a part of a strong military family community. The H&R MFRC is a registered charity, governed by a volunteer board of directors made up of a minimum of 51 per cent military family members. We are here to support military families and members, especially during times when postings and deployments bring challenges. The H&R MFRC has several programs designed to support integration into new communities, and deployment readiness for families to ensure everyone is well prepared for whatever the CAF life throws your way. The Halifax & Region MFRC serves military families in the Halifax Regional Municipality, Shearwater, Central and Northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, with service sites in Halifax, Shearwater and Sydney, Cape Breton. An independent, registered charity the MFRC relies on community support to provide many programs and services. Corporate and individual donations provide resources so Canadian Forces members and their families can stay strong.

The Culture Link is looking for Volunteers to work 3 Saturdays at either the Seaport Farmers market or the Forum. Looking to start Saturday March 10th. Lunch will be provided! Volunteers will be asking the public to answer a quick 2-4 question survey on an iPad about whether or not they would support Culture links proposal to turn the old World Trade Convention Centre into a facility fit to cater to the cities creative industries such as tv, dance, theatre, and music. We are arranging a private event for government officials however we are in much need of asking the publics input as well which is where you come in! For over 70 years, the IWK Auxiliary has been raising money for patient comfort items and programs within the IWK Health Centre. What does this mean? Here are just a few of the amazing ways the Auxiliary has provided essential and often groundbreaking help to the IWK’s children, youth and families, and the staff who care for them: Funds the operational budget of the IWK Family Library which provides reliable health information to parents; it is a pleasant family space with Internet access Financially supports the IWK Rehabiliative Equipment Loan program which lends adaptive equipment to children with special needs so that they can be active Purchases movies, games and consoles, books and TVs for floors throughout the IWK Health Centre; toys for Child Life specialists to give to patients on birthdays Has provided funding to many innovative IWK programs to help children/youth: Read to Me (books for newborn babies); Music Therapy; the Playgarden and more! The Auxiliary annually brings the IWK community together with our Kermesse fundraising  fair held in May. This event raises funds for IWK patient care items and programs — all while giving IWK families and the public a really fun experience. We especially need volunteers every year to set up and take down tables at our Kermesse Flea Market, and to run children's games.  Please help! The IWK Health Centre is a children's, youth & women's hospital for all the Maritime provinces.

The Halifax Community Learning Network is a community-based non-profit organization that provides literacy programs to adults in partnership with Halifax Public Libraries. Volunteer tutors are needed to work one-on-one with adults who want to improve their reading, writing, math, or other essential life skills. Requirements: Grade 12 education or more; excellent oral and written communication skills in English; ability to commit to a scheduled two-to-three hour weekly time commitment for at least six months; an understanding of the needs of the learner and the challenges they have had in the learning process; patience and flexibility to support the learning needs of the learner as some learners take longer to reach their goals than others; creativity in developing lesson plans to motivate and engage the learner; and effectively work with people from diverse backgrounds. Tutoring can be a very rewarding experience. It can give you the opportunity to make a real difference in a person’s life, and enrich your own. We will provide you with training, resources and on-going support.

At Scouts Canada, our Mission is clear: to help develop well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world. We do this by enabling thousands of young Canadians to engage in safe, youth-led, adventurous programs in hundreds of communities across this great country. As Volunteers and staff supporting these programs, our aim is to ensure Scouting remains vibrant and continues to expand its reach: providing more youth with an opportunity to learn and to experience things at Scouts that they cannot experience elsewhere.

Karate Nova Scotia is the only body which the Province of Nova Scotia recognizes for Karate.  Our goals are to provide a provincial organization to promote, encourage and stimulate interest in karate in Nova Scotia and celebrate the excellence in all styles of karate affiliated under Karate Nova Scotia.  Participating in karate extends far beyond the self-defense aspect into training for the mind by increasing concentration, focus and determination.  It not only increases fitness but also self confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem.  Participating in karate molds skills which carry over into all other aspects of life.

The Lung Association of Nova Scotia is a charitable health organization dedicated to improving quality of life by preventing and managing lung disease through research, advocacy, patient services and education. From our main office in Halifax, we serve all Nova Scotians with lung disease through help from generous donors like you. Our focus is simple: offer the best programs and services in lung health possible, advocate for better lung health research and put the money we receive in areas that directly help Nova Scotians breathe easier.

In the early 1970’s the city of Halifax was concerned about the rising costs of social assistance, and the increased dependence of more and more people on it. On December 13th, 1977 a non-profit organization (Human Resource Development Association, now MetroWorks Employment Association), “was launched by the city of Halifax largely through the efforts of the municipal social planning department to provide learning, training, and employment for people on social assistance as an alternative to welfare.” At a time when funds were limited we understood that new solutions needed to be found to better use existing resources and turn them into sources of growth. We pioneered the use of welfare funds to capitalize businesses that hired persons facing persistent multiple barriers to employment. Our approach would change how North America, and the world, looked at poverty reduction, the rising costs of social assistance, unemployment, and economic development. Forty years later our idea of creating hybrid business structures (for-profit and non-profit) continues to drive transformational change encouraging people to work across traditional fields of responsibility to develop new ideas (products, services, models) to tackle the rising needs of: - individuals living with mental illness and ability differences - individuals living on a low or fixed income (social assistance) - single parent households - individuals who are under-employed or unemployed Through our hybrid business structures we have ensured a continued link between economic development and the goal of increasing social equity and individual dignity. Our organizational structure and mandate has been described as “one of the most imaginative initiatives in North America.” For over thirty years (1982 – 2013) our activities were referenced in numerous books, reports, and case studies gaining us international recognition. In Canada, we were selected by Carlton University’s Community Economic Development Technical Assistance program as a “host provider.” A study released in 1993 (and validated by KPMG) determined that the net benefit to government during our first fifteen years of operation totaled $7 million. Over the past 40 years we have operated 14 social enterprises, including: - Stone Hearth Bakery (in operation for 35 years) - Stone Hearth Café and Catering (in operation for 3 years) Recent recognition and awards include: - 2017 Halifax Business Awards: Gold in Small Business of the Year and Silver in Innovative Business of the Year - 2017 Champion of Mental Health: Named by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health - 2017 Great-West Life, London Life, and Canada Life Literacy Innovation Award: Honourable Mention MetroWorks has persevered to create innovative solutions to close the gap between work and welfare. Our organization is a bridge and safe place for individuals from all backgrounds to access the support they need. We are a place where the general public, businesses and government can learn and understand the societal concerns we address. We are proud of our accomplishments, and that we have been able to clearly demonstrate that individuals facing persistent multiple barriers to employment would rather work for a living than depend on social assistance.

StART is a local organization that supports emerging artists of all disciplines. Based out of K’jipuktuk / Halifax, Nova Scotia, StArt works to encourage and empower artists with the skills, networks, and resolve necessary to pursue their chosen vocation. We run an annual festival and mentorship program: Now entering its fourth year, the StART Festival is a multidisciplinary festival of emerging artists based out of the Bus Stop Theatre in K’jipuktuk / Halifax, Nova Scotia. With two days of performances and art installations, featuring upwards of fifteen artists, the festival creates a hub of activity that allows emerging artists to connect with engaged audiences.   The StART Mentorship Program is designed to empower emerging artists by providing them a supported platform to make art, fostering professional development, and creating opportunities to connect with mentors. The Mentorship serves emerging to mid-career artist who are trying to enter the professional realm. We would like to acknowledge that our festival and programming takes place in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.
