Learn to Sledge Activity Support Person

Description: Learn to Sledge: A fun-focused sledge hockey program for children and youth with a disability, or those interested in parasports. The weekly program is open to players of all ability levels and uses games, scrimmages and drills to help participants learn and play sledge hockey, build strength and coordination, and have fun. Volunteers are needed on Saturdays 9:30-11:30 at the BMO Centre in Bedford. Volunteers prep sessions, help players in/out of sledges, and assist on-ice by playing games or pushing sledges. Learn to Boccia Activity Support Person

Organization: Easter Seals Nova Scotia

Description: Learn to Boccia:  Boccia (pronounced bot-cha) is a precision ball sport related to bowling or curling. Players sit on a chair or in their wheelchair and throw or roll their ball with the goal of landing it closest to the white “jack” ball. Originally designed for individuals with severe cerebral palsy, the sport has expanded and is now played by individuals with a wide variety of disabilities, mobility difficulties, and those that are able-bodied. Volunteers are needed Thursdays 6:30-8:30 pm at Northwood in Halifax. Volunteers assist in refereeing games and acting as sport attendants to players (passing them the ball, aligning their ramp). Exhibitor Booth Volunteer

Description: We are urgently looking for volunteers to manage our exhibitor booth on Saturday, September 14 from 10am - 3pm at The Word On The Street Festival at Halifax Central Library. Are you an extrovert with a passion for reading and writing looking for a creative outlet to engage people? We need you for our exhibitor booth at the upcoming The Word On The Street festival in Halifax to help us promote the Ripple Foundation. This is our first year taking part in this exciting festival celebrating the written word, and we have a booth in the Village section of the festival. We need volunteers to hand out materials, speak about our programs, and to promote Ripple Foundation. We want to encourage more young writers in grade 4-8 from Halifax and all of Nova Scotia to enter this year's Kids Write 4 Kids writing contest. One of our previous winners, who lives locally will be reading her published title. We are looking for one of our volunteers to facilitate her Q&A at the end of her book reading. Mayflower Curling Club Volunteer Coordinator

Description: Volunteers at the Mayflower Curling Club are critical to its success.  In addition to providing a much-needed service to the club, volunteering provides a fun and rewarding way for members to meet each other and to give back to the club and the community.   There are many and varied opportunities to volunteer at the club.  Recruiting and overseeing volunteers is a shared responsibility across many roles at the club.  The Volunteer Coordinator will be a central source of information on volunteer opportunities at Mayflower Curling Club and will work with league representatives, event organizers, as well as the staff and Board of the club to coordinate and record details of members’ volunteer commitments.  The role of the Volunteer Coordinator will include:    Assisting the board to promote the recruitment of volunteers to assist with club operations and events (e.g. volunteer bulletin board, social media posts, newsletter information)   Maintaining a list of current volunteer opportunities   Maintaining an updated list of volunteers, contact information, and areas of interest or special skills (e.g. carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, web design, coaching, event organization, ice technician)   Working with the webmaster to establish volunteer hour tracking functionality on the MCC website   Supporting volunteers in recording their volunteer hours, whether directly through the MCC website or by collecting information and entering it into the website   If this opportunity to be more involved in the MCC community interests you, please express your interest

project ARC - Human Rights Education Touring Show

Description: project ARC CASTING CALL The multi-award winning human rights show, project ARC, is looking for some new volunteer actors, aged 12-18, to join us for our 2019-2020 touring season! project ARC is committed to creating a DIVERSE cast, so we need YOU! AUDITIONS happen: Thursday, September 12th 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. The Sawmill Playhouse 33 Crichton Ave., Dartmouth Sunday, September 15th 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Grace United Church 70 King St., Dartmouth Auditions MUST be booked by emailing projectarctheatretour@gmail.com For the audition, you will be asked to: - deliver a memorized excerpt from the show. (Sides will be sent to you upon booking an audition.) - learn some simple stomp choreography (taught during the audition) - sing one a cappella verse and one chorus from a musical theatre song (prepared by you in advance) - tell us why you would like to be a part of project ARC. With over 200 performances at elementary and junior high schools across Nova Scotia, project ARC has increased human rights awareness while raising close to $32,000 for organizations like Doctors Without Borders, First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, Hope for Wildlife, Phoenix Youth, and Right To Play. project ARC  performs at schools every second Thursday morning from mid-November - early June. Rehearsals are on Sunday evenings and every 2nd  Thursday morning and will start in late September. Performances are scheduled to begin in mid-November, at which time Thursday morning rehearsals end. Sunday evening rehearsals continue throughout the year. Cast members are usually responsible for their own transportation to and from shows, with the exception of possible road trips. Participation in project ARC is a great way to build skills and get volunteer experience. Experience with this show has helped cast members fulfill the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, receive awards (including the Nova Scotia Human Rights Award), gain acceptance into university programs, apply for scholarships and build their resumes. Students have used their work with project ARC as a high school co-op credit. Though our core cast will be built from our September auditions, if you are between the ages of 12-18 and identify as male, LGBTQ, a visible minority, or person with disability, we'd love to have you audition at any time until December, 2019 for an understudy role! In project ARC, understudies perform parts of the show throughout the touring season and are guaranteed at least one show in the role they are understudying! Vision Quest Symposium Volunteer

Description: Fighting Blindness Canada is seeking volunteers to help support an educational event called Vision Quest this September in Halifax. Vision Quest is FBC's signature educational conference where people living with vision loss and their families can learn about the latest developments in vision research. Eating Disorders Awarness Week Organizing Committee

Description: Did you know that Eating Disorders are the 3rd most common mental illness? Many people are unaware that these illnesses are common, serious, and treatable. Eating Disorders Awareness Week is Feb 1-7 each year in Canada. A coalition of community based organizations work together to raise awareness of these illnesses through events, education and media campaigns. Eating Disorders NS is the lead for our province. If you love event planning, communications, and organizing, and are passionate about eating disorders, we want to hear from you! Contact Shaleen@eatingdisordersns.ca for more information. Our committee will be meeting bi-weekly, starting in October.  (with an extra meetings in January.) Meeting may be in person or via zoom. We anticipate committee members will spend 1-2 hours per week outside of meetings.
