In order to preserve the historic features of the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway and to provide access to the waterway for the education and the enjoyment of the public, a Private Bill was introduced in 1986 to Establish the Shubenacadie Canal Commission.
According to the Act, the object and purpose of the Commission is to oversee and further promote the Shubenacadie Canal System including the operation of any information or interpretative centres pertaining to or belonging to the Shubenacadie Canal System.
Our mission is to preserve the historic features of the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway and to provide access to the waterway for the education and the enjoyment of the public. In order to achieve this, the Commission pursues the following objectives:
To carry out stabilization, preservation and restoration work to the locks and associated features including the dams, head ponds and channels.
To provide for the maximum practical use of the waterway by shallow draft watercraft.
To provide for the interpretation of sites for visitors.
To provide park-like settings for residents and tourists.
ABOUT THE HALIFAX FRINGE FESTIVAL
The Halifax Fringe is an annual performing arts festival. Since 1990, we have presented an accessible, un-juried, and uncensored festival. The Fringe includes theatre, music, circus, dance, comedy, and more. The Halifax Fringe presents local, national, and international artists. This coming year, the Halifax Fringe will be presented from September 3rd to 13th, 2026.

- Un-juried: Participants are selected by lottery.
- Prioritizing Artists: 100% of the base ticket price goes directly to the artists.
- Uncensored: Festival producers have no control over the artistic content of each performance. The artistic freedom of the participants is unrestrained.
- Accessibility: The Festival must provide an easily accessible opportunity for all audiences and artists to participate.
- Equity: The Fringe will promote and model inclusivity, diversity and multiculturalism, and will endeavour to incorporate them into all aspects of our organization.
The Sackville Heights Community Centre is a non-profit organization located in Middle Sackville. It's mission is "To provide facilities and programs to enhance the health, culture, wellness, and spirit of the members of the community of Sackville, Nova Scotia." The SHCC is home to various organizations within the community that vary from the Boys and Girls Club to the Sackville Seniors Advisory Council. SHCC runs recreational programs, workshops and various community style events such as it's Annual Family Fun Day and Community Yard Sales.
The Santa Paws Fundraiser is an annual fundraiser of the NS SPCA organized and implemented by volunteers of the NS SPCA.
The NS SPCA is a not for profit organization that rescues animals from dangerous and deplorable conditions across the province and provide them second chances; provides a safe haven for animals with nowhere else to go before finding their forever homes: food, bed, exercise, love, affection; Vets every animal that comes through the door including: spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping and overall health check; and works one-on-one with every animal to rebuild their trust in humans and ensure they are well prepared for the next stage of their life.
Apathy is Boring is a national, youth-led organization that works to empower and support young people to get involved in their communities and cities.
Halifax Crafters is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization with a mandate to encourage new artists and local art making.
Each year we organize two shows, one in the spring and one before the Christmas holidays. Our carefully curated and unique market is a place where established and emerging Crafters show their work side by side.
We strive to remain a financially accessible market for vendors while staying fresh, seeking out new talent and encouraging new craftspeople to enter the marketplace. We also strive to make the market accessible to the community by offering free admission.
Green Burial Nova Scotia is a working group of the Ecology Action Centre to raise awareness and accessibility of green burial options in our province. Through education, advocacy and a certification program, we help Nova Scotians understand and recognize the environmental benefits of green burial.
Green burial is the act of returning a body as naturally as possible to the earth. Green burials use less energy and resources, making them lower impact than conventional burials or cremation. They are also less toxic, reduce carbon emissions, and protect worker health. Certain types of green burial can even restore or preserve habitat. Green burial minimizes environmental impacts, conserves and restores natural ecosystems, and may reduce costs at end of life. It offers an opportunity to carry one’s living values into death.
We are currently working in a number of areas including….
• implementation pathways for green cemeteries
• public information sessions
• research of present cemeteries
• strengthening our relationship with the Green Burial Society of Canada
Beyond The Wards Canada is an initiative that aims to highlight the contributions of under-recognized frontline workers that have been largely left out by mainstream media. While we don’t want to take light away from the healthcare workers who are tirelessly fighting COVID-19, it’s important for us to look beyond the hospital wards and see the heroes that occupy our day-to-day lives too. During this challenging time, our goal is to provide everyday heroes with extra support through kind and uplifting messages of encouragement, love, and appreciation. These heroes include the people we rely on every day, such as transportation, sanitation, and postal workers.
We provide a platform where individuals can submit messages of gratitude through art, written notes, letters, and even performances. These messages are sent to the workers of their choice and shared across our media platforms. We’re have also launched our testimonial campaign, Stories Unmasked, which tells the stories of essential workers and the challenges they've faced throughout the pandemic, and we plan to launch an activism campaign by the end of the month.
The Fairview Resource Centre is a community hub located in Fairview, Nova Scotia. Fairview is in the urban core of Halifax and considered the most diverse neighbourhood east of Montreal. The population is approximately 12,000 and the community has many small/medium size businesses, apartment buildings and single family homes. The centre began in 1986 and is a non-profit organization and registered charity. In 2015, the centre moved from 3524 Dutch Village Road to their own facility at 6 Titus Street. The centre has grown to offer a variety of programs and supports for all ages. All programs and services are FREE of charge.
The goal is to provide EDUCATION, OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT to the community. The centre offers community based, participant lead programs in a safe and welcoming environment. We know transportation, language barriers and childcare can be a challenge to access services. That is why the centre offers on-site childcare, help with transportation and uses translators if needed. We want to remove as many barriers as possible so that everyone can access services.
Some of our programs include advocacy and referrals, health and wellness programs, youth programs, pre-school programs, one on one adult skill development opportunities, health and safety programs, community meals, home based support programs, adult/senior programs, family interaction programs and much more.
