We are a non-profit community organization, governed by military family members, that works in partnership with military families, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and Military Family Services (MFS) to deliver programs and services to children, youth, adults and families.
The Halifax Summer Opera Festival and Workshop educates and develops both singers and audiences through the performance of operatic repertoire. Our goals are to present three fully staged operas each summer in Halifax that challenge and enrich both artists and audience, and that are artistically and financially accessible to both. Our aesthetic is artist-centred, creative, professional, relatively low-budget, alternative, modern and respectful of our source material. Our clients are singers (from community members to university undergrads to professionals), creative and technical workers and audience members, who may be experienced opera or theatre goers, or newcomers to the art form
The Halifax Jazz Festival (HJF), formed as JazzEast Rising is a non-profit organization created in 1987 to present the first ever Halifax Jazz Festival (formerly known as the Atlantic Jazz Festival) in Nova Scotia, Canada. Over the past 29 years, HJF has widened its horizons beyond the successful TD Halifax Jazz Festival to become involved, throughout the year, in a diverse range of musical and educational activities.
HJF's mandate runs from the promotion and presentation of soft-seat concerts and club shows to planning educational workshops (such as the renowned Creative Music Workshop). We develop opportunities for amateur musicians, established local artists and the local "jazz aristocracy". We bring renowned performers from many parts of the world to a city that doesn't always find itself naturally on the maps for touring artists.
In brief, we think jazz is important to the culture which we'd like to have, and we want to make sure that kind of culture is strong in Halifax, where we love to live.
The Multicultural Association of Nova Scotia is a collaborative and inclusive organizaiton of interested individuals, community groups, businesses, and governments focused on being a catalyst for multiculturalism in the province of Nova Scotia
It is a volunteer driven, charitable, and culturally competent organization. In pursuit of its Mission and to achieve its Vision (stated below), MANS will:
- Build awareness in Nova Scotia around multicultural issues.
- Recognize, promote and celebrate multicultural successes through out Nova Scotia.
- Advocate and champion multiculuralism so that policies and practices within government and other organizations
reflect a high level of cultural competency.
- Promote tools and resources that people and organizations can use to identify and respnd to emerging
multicultural issues.
The Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame's mission is to honour, preserve, and promote the sport history of Nova Scotia. This mission is accomplished through an annual induction recognizing Hall of Famers, along with the following services that are provided free of charge to the public: a museum that is open year-round in the Scotiabank Centre in downtown Halifax, an artifact collection that is available for viewing online, research and archival materials that are available upon request, and an education program that travels across the province.
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is an agency of the Province of Nova Scotia. Its mandate is to develop a collection, exhibition program, and public program that brings Nova Scotians and visitors in contact with contemporary and historic art that is associated with the province while also introducing art from across the region, the country, and other nations and cultures.
Shakespeare By The Sea has been consistent with it’s annual productions of Shakespeare’s work for 20 seasons, and has included classical and modern pieces in it’s repertoire to round out the theatregoer's experience in the beautiful surroundings of Point Pleasant Park, or in the cozy confines of The Park Place Theatre. Hundreds of thousands of people have been entertained by our unique brand of outdoor theatre, and have been delighted to find the quality of the work is upheld in the intimate indoor venue that houses performances during inclement summer weather, as well as during the fall/winter/spring months.
Shakespeare by the Sea is an artist-driven collaborative organization. Under the guidance of a Board of Directors, the company offers a full repertory season of outdoor summer theatre, traditionally ranging from July 1 to Labour Day.
If you are someone who enjoys theatre, meeting people, and working outdoors volunteering with us is the perfect opportunity for you! Knowledge of Shakespeare is not a prerequisite.
Responsibilities may can include, but are not limited to the following:
Welcoming patrons
Distributing programs
Assisting in the seating of patrons
Ensuring that all guests have an enjoyable experience!
Hours are based around show times which are in the evenings with matinees on the weekends and no shows on Mondays. Any amount of commitment is welcomed.
The Halifax Cycling Coalition is an organization of concerned citizens dedicated to improving cycling conditions and raising awareness of cycling issues in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
The HCC believes that increased bicycle use has the potential to
- Reduce traffic congestion
- Reduce Halifax infrastructure spending
- Improve our health
- Enhance our urban environment
We want to change the circumstances that discourage bicycle use: inadequate cycling facilities, and lack of education for both cyclists and motorists.
Nature Conservancy of Canada is a registered charity and the province's longest serving private land conservation organization. NCC works closely with people and communities to protect our special and unique areas and rich nature heritage for wildlife, animals and nature lovers.Since 1971, NCC has been involved in 110 projects in all corners of Nova Scotia. With 42 different protected areas, NCC has successfully conserved 32,200 acres of forests, wetlands and coastal shorelines in Nova Scotia through donations and land purchases.
Sierra Club Atlantic is a vibrant grassroots organization that empowers people to protect, restore, and enjoy a healthy safe planet. We are your chapter of Canada’s only national grassroots environmental organization, working to bring your community’s concerns to the attention of regional and national leaders. Together, we are a credible, influential voice, working to make a better world a reality.
We are involved in a broad range of activities from advocacy to education. Our major efforts are in the areas of energy and climate change, community health, sustainable economies, the protection of wild spaces, and environmental education.
Halifax Regional Police (HRP) is responsible for policing the urban core of the Halifax region as well as the area commonly referred to as the Sambro Loop and the Purcells Cove - Herring Cove Loop.
HRP is committed to providing volunteers with positions that are both challenging and rewarding. We have a deep appreciation for the contribution our volunteers make and will make every attempt to ensure that your volunteer experience is a positive one.
A volunteer position with HRP will provide you with an opportunity to significantly contribute to HRP’s Mission of "working together to keep our communities safe."
Our club is a non-profit, community-based organization. We are a recognized charity providing social, recreational and educational programming for children and youth. The array of services and programs offered at the Boys and Girls Club of Spryfield is formulated to respond to the needs identified from within the community’s target area.
The Boys and Girls Club of Spryfield now offers a wide array of programs included in our after school program. We offer programs between the hours of 3-5 every week day, as well as full day in-service and summer camps.
Our offerings include:
- beginners music program
- healthy snacks
- gym program
- basic sewing
- peer support
- mentorship programs for both pre teens and teens
- crafts
- help with homework
- basic first aid
- swim to survive
- leadership development
In the past two years attendance in our programs has more than tripled and continues to grow. Although the need for programs that we offer is expanding, our financial opportunities are not.
We are located in a strong community which has given us much support over the years and we will depend on this support in the future if we want to continue to provide our services to the future leaders, businesses, residents and parents of our community.
