Beyond The Wards Canada is an initiative that aims to highlight the contributions of under-recognized frontline workers that have been largely left out by mainstream media. While we don’t want to take light away from the healthcare workers who are tirelessly fighting COVID-19, it’s important for us to look beyond the hospital wards and see the heroes that occupy our day-to-day lives too. During this challenging time, our goal is to provide everyday heroes with extra support through kind and uplifting messages of encouragement, love, and appreciation. These heroes include the people we rely on every day, such as transportation, sanitation, and postal workers.
We provide a platform where individuals can submit messages of gratitude through art, written notes, letters, and even performances. These messages are sent to the workers of their choice and shared across our media platforms. For more information about our cause and the list of different heroes we're supporting, visit our website: https://www.beyondthewardsto.com/. We’re have also launched our testimonial campaign, Stories Unmasked, which tells the stories of essential workers and the challenges they've faced throughout the pandemic, and we plan to launch an activism campaign by the end of the month.

The Emera Blue Nose Marathon is the largest annual running and walking event in Atlantic Canada! Known as “The People's Marathon,” the Blue Nose Marathon welcomes participants of all ages, abilities and fitness levels to celebrate healthy living and active lifestyles. Now in its 21st year, join one of Halifax’s most anticipated community events May 17 – 19, 2024.
Blue Nose Marathon is a community based and volunteer-driven organization.
How it began:
Legend has it, back in the age of sail when the sea was at the core of our existence, mariners would arrive in the port of Halifax with noses stained blue by the dye of their peacoat sleeves – the perfect substitute for a handkerchief. It is in their name we run: Blue Nose. It began with a dream – that Halifax have its own annual marathon. Realizing that there were many races around the world, we came up with a unique idea. Our marathon would be part of a weekend of events promoting and celebrating healthy living and active lifestyles. As well, we would encourage everyone in our community and beyond to get involved as a volunteer, sponsor, spectator, or participant, be it as a runner, walker, or Nordic walker.
With the help of more than 1,000 volunteers, there are six running events (5KM, 10KM, half marathon, full marathon, marathon team relay, youth run-4KM and 2KM) taking place during the Victoria Day weekend. There is also an Active Living Expo that spans two days with more than 80 booths. The Giv’er Charity Challenge has grown to over 80 charities that collectively have raised over $500,000.

Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) is the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization. As we drive toward curing T1D, we help make every day better for the people who live with it.
In 1974, a group of parents determined to find cures for their children living with type 1 diabetes came together to begin what is now Breakthrough T1D, launching the largest funder and advocate for T1D research in Canada.
Our focus was and remains on finding cures for type 1 diabetes (T1D); since then, the organization has helped to fund research that has led to innovation and evolution of treatments that improve the quality of life for people living with T1D.
Vision: A world without T1D
Mission: Improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications
Today: We are Breakthrough T1D. Recognizing that JDRF wasn’t reflective of both type 1 diabetes and the T1D community, we have refreshed our name to meet our mission where it already is.
Our purpose is our north star: As we drive toward curing type 1 diabetes, we help to make every day better for the people living with it.
Working toward a world without T1D
Breakthrough T1D works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people—and to prevent anyone else from ever being diagnosed with it—by funding research, advocating for government support of research and improved access, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community.
Thanks to these better therapies, which our funding has been instrumental in helping to develop and make available – people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await cures.
We must keep up the pace of funding so progress doesn’t slow or stop entirely, so we can get to a world free from type 1 diabetes.

Inspiring Hope and Dignity.
The Brunswick Street Mission seeks to inspire a better quality of life through a ministry of care that addresses physical, emotional, practical and spiritual needs for those experiencing poverty.
We serve those who struggle with poverty. Many are homeless, others are at risk of homelessness. There are individuals, couples, and families with children. Some work, others are on assistance, and others on disability or pension support. Their backgrounds are incredibly varied but they have in common that their present day is a struggle, and their future does not hold much promise.
