We also provide laundry services for unhoused folks, a free tax clinic for those with low annual incomes, and advocate for those experiencing poverty and homelessness in the Halifax Regional Municipality. After moving through several sites ebbs and flows of activity, the work of the Mission was taken up by the congregation of Brunswick Street United Church in 1929. The City Mission offered support including childcare, food, clothing, and employment help. Over time, the work of the Mission grew to be too much for one congregation to carry out and in 2005, the Halifax Presbytery of The United Church of Canada approved the trial formation of a separate entity: Brunswick Street Mission. The trial was deemed a success and permanent arrangements were made in 2009. Our mission remains as it did over 150 years ago: working to meet the needs of those experiencing poverty in Halifax.

Support Services Group is a nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities and supports them live independently in the community, providing the necessary supports to enable independence and freedom of choice. We support around 200 members in Nova Scotia(Metro, South Shore, Annapolis Valley) and their families and we work together to fulfill their goals and help them live their good life in the community.

The YMCA provides newcomer children, youth, and their families with a variety of programs and outreach services. Our approach is to deliver community-based support that is inclusive and welcoming. We also provide services for students at several partner schools. Our YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs helps newcomers to Canada settle into their new communities while also supporting the community in understanding the issues and barriers they face.

The Human Connection Club is a Halifax-based community initiative dedicated to creating warm, inclusive spaces where people can feel seen, valued, and connected. Through creative social events, reflective activities, and meaningful conversations, we bring people together in a world where loneliness is common and genuine connection is rare. Our mission is to reduce isolation, foster belonging, and build a kinder, more compassionate community. We host gatherings such as paint nights, book exchange, meditation and more,  always rooted in authenticity and human connection.

At Volunteer Halifax, we take pride in linking people with local nonprofit community organizations, supporting persons with disabilities, new Canadians, corporations and professionals connect to organizations in and around the city, helping individuals develop skills to advance their careers, and developing knowledge resources that support effective and efficient volunteer capacity.

Catapult is a world-class program designed to give youth a life-changing opportunity to discover their potential, take charge of their lives and become empowered to make a difference. The program is a combination of inspiring presentations and exciting activities set in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. Our leadership program is offered absolutely free to 50 Nova Scotia students entering Grade 10 in September who have been nominated by their school because they have natural leadership qualities and the potential to become strong leaders but who would not normally have access to this type of opportunity due to circumstance such as economics, loss of family, geographic isolation, racial barriers, etc. We are currently looking for camp counselors. Our camp counselors are volunteer mentors who become role models to the youth in our program. They work both independently and as a team to provide a stable, positive and often life-changing experience for our youth. This is a volunteer position – meals, accommodations and supplies are covered by Catapult and there is an honourarium of $800. Catapult Camp – Monday, August 10 – Wednesday, August 19, 2026. (2 days of training Aug 10/11)

The Upper Hammonds Plains Community Development Association operates the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Centre for all residents, businesses and organizations in the greater Upper Hammonds Plains, NS area to enjoy – with the primary focus to provide programs and services for the benefit of the African Nova Scotian residents of Upper Hammonds Plains as we work together and stand on the shoulders of our ancestors to preserve, strengthen and build the African Nova Scotian community of Upper Hammonds Plains.
