Located at Shatford Memorial Elementary School in Hubbards, NS, this cooperative nursery school operates a programme 4 mornings a week to up to 12 preschoolers.

The Hooked Rug Museum of North America collects, exhibits and preserves the heritage of hand-hooked rugs and artifacts used in the making of fibre art. It researches the history of this art, presents it in an accurate manner and also encourages future development of the art.  We are run solely by volunteers with one summer student (open seasonally May - October).

Crohn’s and Colitis Canada is the only national, volunteer-based charity focused on finding the cures for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and improving the lives of children and adults affected by these diseases. We are one of the top two health charity funders of Crohn’s and colitis research in the world, investing over $140 million in research since 1974, leading to important breakthroughs in genetics, gut microbes, inflammation and cell repair as well as laying the groundwork for new and better treatments. We are transforming the lives of people affected by Crohn’s and colitis (the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease) through research, patient programs, advocacy, and awareness.

We are a community-based peer support service for adult survivors of childhood (0-18 yrs) sexual abuse in Nova Scotia. Currently, all peer support, one-on-one or group, is offered online. The training is also online. All Peer Supporters must themselves be survivors of childhood sexual abuse and are assessed for suitability before acceptance into our program. We offer support to, and need peer supporters of, all genders. We encourage male survivors to apply. Peer supporters are not professionals or therapists and cannot give any medical or psychological advice. A peer supporter is expected to offer confidentiality, a good listening ear and a non-judgmental approach. Through training and personal experiences, a peer supporter understands difficulties and can provide empathy, guidance, support and access to resources such as reading materials and techniques to help one through a stressful time. S.O.A.R. regularly offers free peer supporter training for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse who have progressed sufficiently in their recovery that they feel ready to assist others in healing. A peer supporter is taught to offer a survivor: - Respectful listening - Acceptance - Confidentiality - Understanding - Hope - Reassurance that one is not alone - Strategies and information to help one feel more in control Volunteer Peer Supporters are asked to commit to at least two years following the end of training. Trainees must attend all 16 sessions to receive a certificate of completion.

Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia Volunteer Opportunity   Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia (GBSNS)  is on its way to incorporating as a nonprofit organization.  The vision of our Society is that green burial  and other eco-friendly disposition practices are the preferred choice for Nova Scotians.   GBSNS  works to raise awareness and accessibility of green burial options in Nova Scotia.  Through education and advocacy we help Nova Scotians understand and recognize the environmental benefits of green burial.   Green burial is the act of returning a body as naturally as possible to the earth using less energy and resources, making it lower impact than conventional burials or cremation.  Green burials are also less toxic, reduce carbon emissions, and protect worker health.  Green burial minimizes environmental impacts, conserves and can even restore or preserve natural ecosystems.  It offers an opportunity to carry one's living values into death.   Board Secretary (Volunteer Role) The board secretary is a non-voting member of the board and reports to the Board.   Time Commitment 8-10 hours month (board meetings and secretarial duties as described below)   Term of Office Two years   Duties and Responsibilities The Secretary works closely with the Board Chair in the planning of board and Society meetings and is responsible for ensuring the creation and timely distribution of the board meeting agenda and Society membership meetings (AGM) the accurate recording and distribution of the minutes of board meetings.  The minutes should reflect the format and level of detail as required by the board the creation and maintenance of an up-to-date board planning calendar, outlining matters to be on the agenda over the course of a year (e.g. approval of budget, report on board recruitment, AGM, as well as key events board members are expected to attend) maintenance of a full contact list of board members including board member appointment dates, term of appointments and board member bios updating, maintaining and safe storage of the Association's minute book and other legal documents such as incorporation documents, bylaws, insurance policies and important contracts maintenance of an up-to-date list of members of the Society the accurate recording and distribution of the minutes of the Society's Annual General Meeting   Qualifications A clear understanding and a commitment to the mission of GBSNS Preferably at least one year of relevant experience of working with a nonprofit Board Knowledge of meeting procedures An adequate level of writing proficiency and access to a computer for word processing   For more information, please contact Theresa Farrell, Volunteer Co-Coordinator  theresafarrell1099@gmail.com

The Bedford- Sackville Learning Network is a Community Learning Organization within the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education. We provide free classroom instruction and tutoring services to adults who wish to upgrade their reading, writing, math, and computer skills. Most of our learners are adults who haven’t achieved their high school diploma.

Our club falls under the Kin Canada umbrella. We are a not for profit organization (you may have heard of our local Kinsmen Clubs) who raises funds through projects and fundraisers and inturn gives it back to the community through donations request. We have been a major supporter of Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis, the IWK amongst many, many more. We have been doing this nationally since 1920. Our club has been in existence since 1963 and just celebrated our 60th anniversary. Our motto is "Serving the Community's Greatest Need".

Our motto is "Serving the Community's Greatest Need"The Kinsmen Club of Sackville has been "Serving the Community's Greatest Need" since 1961.The club members come from all walks of life but share a common dedication to helping those in need in our community. The Association of Kinsmen Clubs is a uniquely Canadian creation. Its founder, Hal Rogers [1899-1994], was a distinguished veteran of World War I and successful Ontario businessman. He looked beyond the confines of his entrepreneurial office walls in 1920 to establish a new service club whereby other members of his town could give back to the citizens less fortunate than themselves. That service took on international participation with his steerage of the Kinsmen clubs to support Britain during the 1939-45 War, and reconstruction for Britain in the aftermath of the conflict. For his positive efforts Hal Rogers was awarded the honour of Officer of the British Empire [1948], and received further recognition for his contributions to Canada with membership in the Order of Canada [1980]. His was an imposing model to follow. Kinsmen throughout Canada well understood that it was not the size of an endeavour which mattered. The heart of the Kinsmen movement is fellowship and the will to act in service for others. The Kinsmen Club of Sackville [as it was renamed in 1967] continues to realize the value of the founding ideals of Hal Rogers. Service can be anything from picking up litter at the park next to the Kin Centre to fund raising for Cystic Fibrosis. No one member engages in work for self-promotion. Rather the Club seeks publicity to bring their efforts to the notice of other prospective members to ensure the continuity of service to the community.
