Board Member for the Board of Directors

Description: The Halifax Association for Community Living (HACL) is a longstanding not-for-profit organization that is run by a volunteer Board of Directors. HACL has served the Halifax Regional Municipality since it was founded in 1958. We support adults, youth and child with intellectual disabilities by providing programming in our community. HACL also supports their families through family-centered programming.  We are excited to announce HACL is seeking new board members for our volunteer board of directors. We are looking for dynamic individuals with a passion for inclusion of persons with disabilities and interest in serving the Halifax community. Our goal is to create a strong and diverse board that has multiple perspectives and talents. This is an exciting time to join a transitioning organization that is building new and exciting opportunities for our community. *Please note that we seek a 6 month to one year commitment.

Tutor - Mentor with Pathways to Education

Description: Pathways to Education Spryfield reduces poverty and its effects by lowering the dropout rate among high school students from economically disadvantaged communities. Pathways works to increase high school graduation rates and help youth pursue post-secondary education and/or find meaningful employment. The role of the Pathways Tutor/Mentor is to provide academic support and to engage in positive role modelling for youth during program time. Volunteers work with youth on a weekly basis and provide homework and academic support when needed. Volunteers develop supportive relationships and act as a positive adult role model for the youth in the program, providing opportunities for the volunteer to support the student to develop leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution, problem-solving, life skills, and communication skills. Students are also provided opportunities throughout the year to connect with role models, future employers, and post-secondary institutions through specialty workshops and events. Previous experience working with youth 13-18 is considered an asset. A passion for helping and supporting young people with their education is a must. Must be comfortable working both one-on-one and in small groups (up to 5 students) within a larger group setting assisting with academic tasks (homework, assignments, projects) related to core subjects such as Math, Science, English Language Arts, Social Sciences, French, Business etc. All volunteers must be able and willing to complete a criminal offence declaration form. Additionally, for specific volunteer roles within our organization, you must also be able and willing to successfully submit to and pass a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry search, which requires a photocopy of your official Canadian Identification (driver’s licence or health card).    

Start2Finish Running & Reading Coach Mentor

Description: Start2Finish’s mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support to Canada’s at risk children throughout their school years, nurturing mind, body and social health so they are empowered to succeed and become role models for change.  This mission is achieved by our dedicated volunteers and mentor Coaches. The programs at Start2Finish encourage literacy, healthy active living, and play. The program runs from October to May one afternoon a week for two hours. Volunteers support students in various fitness and reading activities. As a result, students stay in school, build self-confidence and develop positive friendships with mentors and peers. With mentor Coaches, students discover the possibilities of a brighter future.  Information to highlight: - Program runs from October to May; there is room for flexibility in the length of time to volunteer - Children in the Running & Reading Club are 6 -13 years old; from grades 1-6 - You do not have to be a runner to volunteer, there is something for everyone! - The time commitment is one afternoon per week for 2.5 hours  The mentor's role includes: -        Supervising and encouraging the children through the physical activity component of the program  -       Help to distribute snack to the students after the physical activity component -        Word of the Day: Each volunteer has the opportunity to explain a "Word of the Day” for the whole group.  -        Journal: Volunteers assist children to record their accomplishments in both running and reading each week. -        Reading: Volunteers supervise as children read silently, read one-on-one with children or lead group reading, listen to them read and providing help and encouragement.  *A weekly program guide is provided  **Contact by phone or email; toll free number is 1-888-320-8844 ext. 206   Program locations include: Central Spryfield Elementary School, Tuesdays 3:00-5:00 pm Chebucto Heights Elementary School, Thursdays 3:10-5:20 pm St. Joseph Alexander McKay School, Wednesdays 3:15-5:15 pm Harbour View School, Tuesdays 2:45-4:45 pm

Frontline Volunteers Needed for Out of the Cold Emergency Shelter

Description: Out of the Cold is a community-based organization which works to provide shelter and community supports to people who are homeless or precariously housed in the HRM.  OTC is currently recruiting frontline volunteers and meal donations for the 2017/18 season.  Email volunteerotcs@gmail.com for an application or for more information. Holiday Parade of Lights Volunteers

Description: The Chronicle Herald Holiday Parade of Lights presented by Eastlink is taking place on Saturday, November 17th, 2018 at 6:00pm in downtown Halifax! This year's parade will be led by the fourth annual Red Nose Run, a fun run that follows the same route as the parade and begins immediately before the parade. We will need volunteers on the route for the run as well. For 22 years we have relied on the help of our incredible volunteers to pull off the biggest holiday event in Halifax! Volunteers for Our Reception Desk Are Needed at The Lung Association of Nova Scotia

Christmas Kettle Campaign Volunteers

Description: The Salvation Army (Fairview Citadel) is launching its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign from Nov 18-Dec 23, and is seeking volunteers to stand alongside our kettles at Walmart Bayers Lake, Superstore Bayers Lake, Sobeys Clayton Park and Sobeys Larry Uteck. Volunteer shifts are 12:00-2:00/2:00-5:00/5:00-8:00 . 100% of the funds raised from this campaign stay in the community and are used to support local Salvation Army Programs for people in need including family services, food baskets, emergency shelter and addictions counseling.
