Opportunity Description:

Pathways to Education Spryfield reduces poverty and its effects by lowering the dropout rate among high school students from economically disadvantaged communities. Pathways works to increase high school graduation rates and help youth pursue post-secondary education and/or find meaningful employment. The role of the Pathways Tutor/Mentor is to provide academic support and to engage in positive role modelling for youth during program time. Volunteers work with youth on a weekly basis and provide homework and academic support when needed. Volunteers develop supportive relationships and act as a positive adult role model for the youth in the program, providing opportunities for the volunteer to support the student to develop leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution, problem-solving, life skills, and communication skills. Students are also provided opportunities throughout the year to connect with role models, future employers, and post-secondary institutions through specialty workshops and events. Previous experience working with youth 13-18 is considered an asset. A passion for helping and supporting young people with their education is a must. Must be comfortable working both one-on-one and in small groups (up to 5 students) within a larger group setting assisting with academic tasks (homework, assignments, projects) related to core subjects such as Math, Science, English Language Arts, Social Sciences, French, Business etc. All volunteers must be able and willing to complete a criminal offence declaration form. Additionally, for specific volunteer roles within our organization, you must also be able and willing to successfully submit to and pass a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry search, which requires a photocopy of your official Canadian Identification (driver’s licence or health card).
