Information Without Borders Conference (Dalhousie University)

On February 15th, 2017, the 11th annual student-run Information Without Borders Conference (IWB) will be held in the McInnes Room at Dalhousie University’s Student Union Building. The topic for the 2017 conference is: Digital Governance. Discussion at the conference will consider the following aspects of digital governance-related information: • Social Media/Citizen Engagement • Privacy • Open Data Initiative • Internal and External Communications Registration is now open. Student registration will be $25 + a nominal Eventbrite fee, or $105 + a nominal Eventbrite fee for professionals & community members. Registration includes access to all events, breakfast, lunch and a gift bag. We are also running two competitions that feature student research: the first is a poster competition, the second is a paper competition for the student speaker session. We encourage all graduate students who are researching relevant topics to apply.

Without a job and those lines to say, an actress is just an ordinary person, trying not to look as scared as she feels. There is no greater freedom than becoming someone else, if only for a few hours. This is what the young women living together in New York's Footlights Club, a rooming house for aspiring actresses, hope to achieve. Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman's 1936 play is a heartfelt account of the everyday struggles and failures which pave the way to the rare stories of success and fame on the stage and screen. This production will introduce you to our third-year Acting class who, like their characters, are about to begin their performing careers.

January 27, 2017 9:00am to 4:00pm Room 302, Student Union Building Part of Dalhousie's Thrive mental wellness initiative (dal.ca/thrive) Could you be better equipped to address issues and provide support to faculty and staff experiencing mental health issues? If you answered, “Yes,” you are not alone. This workshop will provide managers and supervisors with tools to help address mental health issues at work by raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of employee mental health issues and addressing their impact on the workplace. According to Statistics Canada, it is estimated that nearly half of the 72 million workdays that workers are absent per year in Canada are attributed to mental disorder-related leaves.1 Topics: - The most common mental health issues: depression, anxiety, acute stress - disorder, substance abuse, and psychosis - The signs and symptoms associated with mental health issues - The roles and responsibilities for Human Resources, Leaders, Managers and others in recognizing the signs of mental illness in the workplace - The legalities regarding mental health disabilities and reasonable accommodations - How to reduce or prevent absenteeism resulting from mental and nervous disorders - How to address disruption to the workplace caused by individuals experiencing mental illness - Workplace recommendations for effectively communicating with affected employees - How to reintegrate faculty and staff into the workplace after a mental health leave

In this 12-hour non-credit course you will focus on improving the speaking and pronunciation skills needed for graduate study. Through interactive activities and exercises, lab time and instructor feedback, you will develop all aspects of academic speaking. The course will include elements of pronunciation at the word, phrase and sentence level. Other topics covered will include the skills of speaking about academic research, presenting, and facilitating in-class discussion in English. The course will be capped at 15 students. Undergraduate students and students from other universities will be admitted with permission from the instructor.

This course will help you prepare for the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) academic communication competition. In a series of three two-hour sessions you will work on the content and delivery of your 3MT presentation with a special emphasis on the linguistic challenges for grad students whose first language is not English. The topics you will focus on include improving the accuracy of your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, developing fluency, and improving your overall presentation skills. Lots of instructor guidance and feedback will be given and a certificate of completion will be issued for those who attend all three sessions.
