Expertise Modeling Using Hierarchical Classification And Wikipedia Knowledge (Dalhousie University)

Category:
Dates: December 15, 2016 - December 15, 2016

Abstract: The traditional text classification approach involves classifying document into a class where classification hierarchy is limited to one level. However, the real-world problems are more complex and could be related to hierarchical structure and therefore there has been numerous research in hierarchical classification and algorithms. Millions of enthusiastic researchers contribute in the form of research articles, books and conference dissertations, and abundance of research data makes finding an expert a non-trivial task. We define expertise modeling as profiling an expert, a knowledgeable person in one or more domains, based on evidence from research articles into one or more research topics. A hierarchical classifier is trained on titles and abstracts of research articles and predicts the research topic(s) for a given document as a title and an abstract. We have used traditional Bag-of-Words (BOW) representations of the text which is enriched using a semantic knowledge from Wikipedia’s concepts and categories. The representations based on concepts and categories are called Bag-of-Concepts (BOC) and Bag-of-Categories (BOK) respectively. For each of these representation a hierarchical classifier is trained and an output from each of these hierarchical classifiers are combined using consensus methods to output a class. In reality, a research articles can belong to multiple research areas and therefore two methods to multi-label a research article is proposed. We evaluate and compare the performance of hierarchical model with a baseline traditional classifier, and using different training set amount and evaluation parameters such as precision, recall, and f-measure. The combined outputs from hierarchical classifiers, BOW, BOC, and BOK is compared with a traditional classifier and hierarchical classifier based on BOW. The results from various approaches, comparison of performance of different hierarchical classifiers and current issues are also discussed. Speaker Bio: Afiz Momin received his under-graduate major in Bioinformatics and before joining graduate school at Dalhousie University, he has professional experience on various projects such as web and database technologies, big data and text analysis. Currently, he is involved in research in Visual Text Analytics Lab under supervision of Dr. Evangelos Milios. His thesis research is focused on expertise modeling using hierarchical classification and semantics from external sources such as Wikipedia. Afiz’s research interests mainly include software engineering, data science, text analysis and visualization.

Curated by Ron Foley MacDonald The year 2016 marks four hundred years since William Shakespeare’s death. The Bard’s works continue to inspire and confound, with significant motion picture versions appearing on a regular basis. In this series, films have been chosen for manageable durations as well as their overall quality. The series begins and ends with films about The Bard, kicking off with the Oscar-Winning Shakespeare in Love and concluding with Anonymous, which questions Shakespeare’s authorship. 14 December – Anonymous Roland Emmerich, Germany/UK/USA, 2011, 130 minutes. A luxuriant thriller that suggests The Bard was a front for a subversive aristocrat. Anonymous stars Rhys Ifans and Vanessa Redgrave.

Deep Reinforcement Learning with Subsumption Architecture for Embodied Agents (Dalhousie University)

Category:
Dates: December 13, 2016 - December 13, 2016

Abstract: Deep Reinforcement Learning methods have gained a lot of attention in recent years due to their ability to learn complex behaviors based only on high-level sensory input and simple rewards as the feedback. Deep Q-Networks (DQN) could be a well-fitted solution for controlling embodied agents such as mobile robots, which need to interact with the environment using their senses and actuators. The subsumption architecture is a classic method for controlling embodied agents using parallel, loosely coupled processes. The subsumption architecture includes a hierarchy of layers - each layer is controlling different aspect of the agent's behavior and may inhibit or suppress actions of other layers. In my research I am showing how DQNs may be used with the subsumption architecture and thus, how such system may learn to control an embodied agent. Speaker Bio: Tomasz Tajmajer is a PhD student of computer science in the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics at the University of Warsaw where he works under the supervision of Dr Piotr Wasilewski. He received a MSc in telecommunications engineering from the Warsaw University of Technology where he also participated in several research projects related to Wireless Sensor Networks and Smart Cities. Currently he is interested in embodied artificial intelligence and his area of research includes Deep Neural Networks and their applications to cognitive science and robotics. He is also a member of the Mars Rover Team at the University of Warsaw.

Complex Event Processing in ProSyWis (Dalhousie University)

Category:
Dates: December 12, 2016 - December 12, 2016

Abstract: The goal of the research project ProSyWis is to support so-called knowledge workers in their daily business. Knowledge workers are assumed to work on dynamic cases, whose sequence of actions can hardly be foreseen in advance. In contrast to static business models, dynamic cases are continuously driven by exogenous business events (e.g. E-Mails, location-based events, workflow events) or social media events (e.g. Twitter or RSS feeds) as well as by context-based data, as for instance, from previously closed cases or additional case-based meta data (e.g. the liquidity of a client). The CEP engine ESPER has been adopted for gathering, correlating, and analyzing these events. Given the occurrence of an event, further subsequent actions can be invoked within the CEP engine, for instance, for executing cases or business processes in a workflow engine or for reporting events together with recommended actions in a user portal. Stochastic models like MEP (Markov Decisions Process! es) are used to predict optimal strategies for invoking those actions that achieve maximal benefit. In this presentation, a brief introduction is given to the ProSyWis project. Besides, research results from various master and bachelor theses are presented that have aimed at integrating the CEP engine into the ProSyWis software architecture. A prototype will be presented demonstrating the capabilities of such an engine. Current and future research topics will be addressed in the end of the presentation. Managing Data Provenance in the Semantic Web (Dalhousie University)

Category:
Dates: December 8, 2016 - December 8, 2016

Abstract: The Web contains some extremely valuable information; however, often poor quality, inaccurate, irrelevant or fraudulent information can be found. With the increasing amount of data available on the Web, is it becoming more and more difficult to distinguish truth from speculations on the Web. One of the most, if not the most, important criterion used to evaluate the data credibility is the information source, i.e. the data origin. Trust in the information source is a valuable currency users have to value or judge such data. Data popularity, recentness (or the time of validity), reliability, or vagueness ascribed to the data may also help users to judge the validity and appropriateness of information sources. We call this knowledge derived from the data the provenance of the data. Provenance is an important aspect of the Web. It is essential in identifying the suitability, veracity, and reliability of information, and in deciding whether information is to be trusted, reused or even integrated with other information sources. Therefore, models and frameworks for representing, managing, and using provenance in the realm of the Semantic Web technologies and applications are critical required. This dissertation highlights the benefits of the use of provenance in different Web applications and scenarios. In particular, it presents management frameworks for querying and reasoning in the Semantic Web with provenance, and a collection of Semantic Web tools that explore provenance information when ranking and updating caches of Web data. This dissertation aims to prove the importance and benefits of the use of provenance in different Web applications and scenarios. The flexibility of the approaches presented combined with their high scalability makes this dissertation a possible building block for a Semantic Web proof and trust layer. Speaker Bio: Renata Dividino will be giving a PhD test talk on “Managing and Using Data Provenance in the Semantic Web”. She will defend her PhD in the University of Koblenz, Germany, this December. Her reseach interests are Semantic Web, Data and Workflow Provenance, knowledge Representation and Reasoning, AI and Visualization. Renata has worked for several universities and research institutes such as the Fraunhofer IGD, is the world's leading institute for applied research in Visual Computing, and the DFKI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence.

Machine Learning and Evolutionary Computation in Cryptography (Dalhousie University)

Category:
Dates: December 6, 2016 - December 6, 2016

Abstract: In this talk, we address several applications of metaheuristics and machine learning in cryptography. We start with a brief introduction on machine learning and metaheuristic techniques and following that, we address two practical scenarios. More specifically, as the first example we consider a combinatorial optimization problem in the form of designing S-boxes with good cryptographic and implementation properties (with a special emphasis on area and power perspective). Moreover, we discuss how to use population based metaheuristic techniques like those belonging to the evolutionary computation area in the design process. Following that, we investigate how to use machine learning in side-channel attacks. There, we elaborate on the life-cycle of a machine learning process with an example application taken from the DPA contest web site, more specifically, attacking masked AES implementation. Finally, we give a brief conclusion and address several possible future research a! venues. Speaker Bio: Stjepan Picek is a postdoctoral researcher in the Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography (COSIC) group at KU Leuven, Belgium. His research interests are applied cryptography, machine learning, and evolutionary computation. He finished his PhD in 2015 as a double doctorate under the supervision of Lejla Batina (Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands) and Domagoj Jakobovic (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Croatia). Prior to that, Stjepan worked in industry and government. He regularly publishes papers in both evolutionary computation and cryptography conferences. Stjepan is also a member of organization committee for International Summer School in Cryptography and the vice-president of the Croatian IEEE CIS Chapter, as well as the member of several professional societies (ACM, IEEE, IACR).

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM By William Shakespeare, Directed by Philip Akin (Dalhousie University)

Category: Arts and Entertainment
Dates: December 3, 2016 - December 3, 2016

"And to that place the sharp Athenian law cannot pursue us!" In Athens, love is restricted by unfeeling men and by the harsh edicts of the law. But beyond the walls, the wild woods beckon to the lovers who seek to break feee. Freedom has its own dangers, though, for in the forest are spirits of another sort. In the unchained, shifting world of the Fairy King and Queen, true love can die, clowns can become monsters, friends can become enemies, and cues can be misunderstood. In Shakespeare's fantasy of escape, we learn how a night in the forest can transform the city forever.

Resistance in the Time of Trump (Dalhousie University)

Category: Other Event
Dates: December 3, 2016 - December 3, 2016

What does the election of Donald Trump, and the accompanying rightwing populist upsurge, mean for social justice and basic democratic rights? While many feel shocked and frightened by this “exceptional” moment, context is necessary to understand it. White supremacy, misogyny, xenophobia, settler-colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism have deep roots that grew long before Trump -- in Canada as well as in the US. How can we critically understand and resist these toxic dynamics? How can we build alternatives to them right now in our own communities? Please join a public discussion about moving beyond both the fascist “altright” and a bankrupt (neo)liberalism; toward a collectively liberated society with justice and democracy for all. On-site Child care provided, and pizza will be served.
