January 27, 2017 9:00am to 4:00pm Room 302, Student Union Building Part of Dalhousie’s Thrive mental wellness initiative (dal.ca/thrive) Could you be better equipped to address issues and provide support to faculty and staff experiencing mental health issues? If you answered, “Yes,” you are not alone. This workshop will provide managers and supervisors with tools to help address mental health issues at work by raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of employee mental health issues and addressing their impact on the workplace. According to Statistics Canada, it is estimated that nearly half of the 72 million workdays that workers are absent per year in Canada are attributed to mental disorder-related leaves.1 Topics: – The most common mental health issues: depression, anxiety, acute stress – disorder, substance abuse, and psychosis – The signs and symptoms associated with mental health issues – The roles and responsibilities for Human Resources, Leaders, Managers and others in recognizing the signs of mental illness in the workplace – The legalities regarding mental health disabilities and reasonable accommodations – How to reduce or prevent absenteeism resulting from mental and nervous disorders – How to address disruption to the workplace caused by individuals experiencing mental illness – Workplace recommendations for effectively communicating with affected employees – How to reintegrate faculty and staff into the workplace after a mental health leave
