Fighting Blindness Canada (FBC) is Canada’s leading private funder of vision research. We offer hope to Canadians by identifying the best, most promising research that is driving treatments and cures for blinding eye diseases, and by raising and stewarding funds to support this essential, sight-saving research. Over our 45-year history, we have invested over $40 million to support vision research and education across Canada: that’s over 200 research grants that have led to over 600 new discoveries in areas such as: - stem cell research - neuroprotective therapies - technological developments - pharmaceuticals - gene therapies We are also committed to developing vision research funding partnerships in Canada and internationally. Through these partnerships, we have helped to unlock more than $10 million to drive research forward. All of the research and educational initiatives we fund supports our goals of understanding why vision loss occurs, how it can be slowed or stopped, and how sight can be restored.
First Book Canada, a registered charity, provides new books and educational resources to Canadian children from low-income families, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. In 2014, we granted over 825,000 new books to children across the country. Through work with publishing partners, an ever-expanding network of volunteers, and over 3,000 book recipient groups, First Book Canada grants children in need unprecedented access to free and low-cost books. First Book Canada works through existing community programs and literacy efforts already serving this population, elevating the quality of these programs with additional mission-related resources.

Our mandate is to inspire audiences and artists to imagine change, and our mission is to promote local culture and preserve local heritage through the telling of tales across multiple platforms. Frag For Charity is an initiative of volunteers that raises funds and awareness for cancer charities by hosting local and online video game tournaments, auctions and entertainment events. It was founded in 2006 after a gamer lost his father to lung cancer. Over the last 9 years, Frag For Charity has raised over $90 000 in more than 20 events for health-related charities including the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the Canadian Mental Health Association.
FreeGeek Halifax is looking for volunteers to help get started. We are especialy looking for those with previous experiance in running a non-profit. Free Geek’s mission is to sustainably reuse technology, enable digital access, and provide education to create a community that empowers people to realize their potential. Technology is rapidly changing. Computers, monitors, printers, and other electronics are all being replaced every few years. Free Geek is where retired electronic devices can find new life. Free Geek staff and volunteers will work hard to refurbish the electronics we receive. We will maintain strict data security standards when processing any data-bearing devices that pass through our facility. By choosing us as your e-cycler, your electronics will be properly disposed, or given back to the community through our digital inclusion programs.
Freedom Drivers provide the ride to Freedom for thousands of shelter animals on death row. We transport in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes.
Frontier College is a non-profit "charity" (not your typical college). We provide FREE tutoring to UNDER-SERVED children, youth and adults in reading, writing, numeracy, homework, and English language skills. In Halifax, every year we train 150 "volunteer tutors" who tutor the learners in community centres, schools and libraries. We have been in Nova Scotia for over 100 years. Our tutors can choose from a variety of different volunteer opportunities. It is fun and rewarding, and addresses a growing need in our community.
