Dartmouth Housing is a not-for-profit provider of affordable housing established in 1982. The majority of our properties are 3 or 4 bedroom duplexes, all within Dartmouth. The organization was established to fill the housing demand for families that did not have sufficient earned income to obtain decent, adequate and safe living accommodations. Our mandate is to provide safe, affordable housing for low and middle income working families.

Located at Shatford Memorial Elementary School in Hubbards, NS, this cooperative nursery school operates a programme 4 mornings a week to up to 12 preschoolers.

First Book Canada, a registered charity, provides new books and educational resources to Canadian children from low-income families, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. In 2014, we granted over 825,000 new books to children across the country. Through work with publishing partners, an ever-expanding network of volunteers, and over 3,000 book recipient groups, First Book Canada grants children in need unprecedented access to free and low-cost books. First Book Canada works through existing community programs and literacy efforts already serving this population, elevating the quality of these programs with additional mission-related resources.

Our club is a non-profit, community-based organization. We are a recognized charity providing social, recreational and educational programming for children and youth. The array of services and programs offered at the Boys and Girls Club of Spryfield is formulated to respond to the needs identified from within the community’s target area. The Boys and Girls Club of Spryfield now offers a wide array of programs included in our after school program. We offer programs between the hours of 3-5 every week day, as well as full day in-service and summer camps. Our offerings include: - beginners music program - healthy snacks - gym program - basic sewing - peer support - mentorship programs for both pre teens and teens - crafts - help with homework - basic first aid - swim to survive - leadership development In the past two years attendance in our programs has more than tripled and continues to grow. Although the need for programs that we offer is expanding, our financial opportunities are not. We are located in a strong community which has given us much support over the years and we will depend on this support in the future if we want to continue to provide our services to the future leaders, businesses, residents and parents of our community.

Chisholm Services for Children is a not for profit organization that provides residential care for eight children using a trauma informed care framework of practice. In addition to the residential care facility, Chisholm also operates the LINKS Children’s Literacy Program, a literacy skills development program providing support to students in grades primary to six throughout four sites in the Halifax area. The LINKS program provides literacy support for children who are reading below grade level and/or who are diagnosed with a learning disability. HISTORY Chisholm Services for Children has a long history of providing service to women, children and families dating back to 1890. The service was founded by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd and adapted to the needs of the community over the years, providing a range of services for often misunderstood and marginalized members of the community. In the early seventies two community based programs were established to provide a place for young women, 12 years of age and older, to live when they were unable to live at home. These programs were called Chisholm Centre and Barnett House. On June 3, 2004, Chisholm Youth Services incorporated under the Society’s Act of Nova Scotia, and on July 1, 2004 Chisholm Youth Services officially took over the operations of Chisholm Centre and Barnett House. Continuing to adapt to the changing needs of our community, in partnership with the Department of Community Services, Chisholm now provides residential care for co-ed children 12 and younger who have experienced complex developmental trauma. As a result of the trauma, these children are unable to live at home. With this change in mandate, the service officially changed its name to Chisholm Services for Children on June 29, 2012. Today, Chisholm is proud to offer the only long-term program for children requiring such care in Halifax, reaching across Nova Scotia to provide care for children as needed. The Chisholm Foundation for Children was established on November 19, 2010 to assist Chisholm in providing a residence for the children to live, as well as support the delivery of the service as required. The Empathy Factory was founded in 2010. Our mission is to instil a sense of empathy and a philanthropic spirit in Canada's youth. We want to inspire, empower and challenge youth to tap into their empathy and create social change through age appropriate Empathy Factory programs. Our Programs Project: Empathy - We visit schools and deliver workshops on the value of volunteering, philanthropy, and related topics to children aged 8-15. We then challenge them to submit ideas that will better their communities in the categories of health, environment, social justice and/or education. The top one or two ideas at each school receive the full support and mentorship of the Empathy Factory staff and volunteers throughout the execution of the idea. Upon completion of the projects, we ensure that each student submits a reflection of their learning outcomes, successes, and failures. Accelerating: Empathy - The two-day annual conference event brings together aspiring social innovators from high schools across the province to take part in an experiential educational environment that seeks to inspire, challenge, and empower participants. Participants are asked to devise a solution to a timely social issue, collaborate with fellow students, mentors and industry experts to refine their idea, and pitch their polished proposal to a panel of high-profile judges.

The Word on the Street is a free to attend, one-day literary and literacy festival on Halifax's beautiful waterfront. The festival features local and national authors, illustrators, and artists who come to read, discuss, and collaborate. WOTS is a family friendly event with engaging content for all ages!

Camp Courage is an empowering, life changing, award winning, one of a kind, free camp for young women. It is a registered charity that introduces women aged 15-19 to careers as first responders. Camp Courage provides information, inspiration and education, as well as, opportunities to experience the physical demands placed on a police officer, firefighter and paramedic. The ultimate goal is that the young women leave with a sense of empowerment and increased confidence to believe that they can achieve any goal, career or dream that they desire. The camp is 100% free. The selection process includes writing an essay on how to improve someone else’s life that is less fortunate or on how to improve their community. Instead of paying cash, the young lady must do what she described in her essay. Waypoint Centre for Self-Directed Learning is an educational alternative to school for people ages 12-19, located in Halifax, NS. We believe that every young person wants to learn and deserves an environment that: - encourages learning that is meaningful and relevant to her/him - evolves at the pace of the individual - is tailored to the person's strengths and challenges - is trusting and supportive, not coercive Waypoint replicates an organizational model that has been successful in offering a transformational educational experience to young people who need something different than the traditional school setting. We use homeschooling as a legal mechanism to help kids leave unproductive school situations and craft their own personalized life of learning. Jost Mission Day Care Society (dba Edward Jost Children’s Centre) According to the historical records, the Edward Jost Children’s Centre was founded in the 1860s by Halifax businessman Edward Jost. Originally located on Brunswick Street in Halifax; the current location of the Halifax Metro Centre. Amongst it’s charitable works, Edward Jost’s mission provided childcare and, in 1910, it opened a nursery school and after school program. Today the Edward Jost Children’s Centre in located in Spryfield, NS and is the oldest daycare in metro Halifax. A non-profit daycare centre with over 100 years of providing quality childcare to the local people of Halifax. In 2011 it opened it’s second building right next door, Edward Jost Annex. Currently with the two centres we have 108 licensed spaces for children ages 6 months to 5 years. Edward Jost Chidren’s Centre and Edward Jost Annex are one of the most modern and educationally orientated child care centres in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

We are a small non-profit organization who has raises funds that helps grant children an advance education by establishing and operating an independent school for grades primary through middle school grade nine, open to children and youth of the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Trade School is a self-organised space for alternative education. People from all backgrounds, abilities and ages are invited to both share their skills and learn from others. We want to make education accessible and create a space for building community and resilience.
