In the simplest terms, a Community Health Board is the eyes, ears, and voice for the community’s health. Together with other groups, the Board engages community members in understanding the community health needs and then supports many different community initiatives that aim to improve health in the local community.
The North Woodside Community Association is a volunteer-led, charitable, non-profit organization that exists to serve the residents of North Woodside and the surrounding community.
The mission of the North Woodside Community Association is to aid in focusing the energy and skills of citizens in building a stronger community in which to live, work and play.
Specifically, the Association focuses on:
Providing a meeting place for people to discuss and take action on issues of common concern and interest
Encouraging the development of social, recreational and educational opportunities
Hosting special events that promote meaningful interaction among residents
The Association will express, in its actions, its commitment to community accountability, fiscal responsibility, accessibility and diversity.
The Canadian Paraplegic Association (Nova Scotia) is a charitable organization providing client directed counselling and rehabilitation services, information, advocacy and support services to persons with spinal cord injuries and other mobility disabilities---and their families---throughout Nova Scotia. CPA(NS) has been providing these services and supports for over 64 years. Our mission is to assist persons with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities to achieve independence, self reliance and full community participation. We work closely with the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre in our reach to support those in need as they return to their home and their communities...your communities.
BFM Thrift Store is a volunteer driven thrift store that offers premium used goods. We help families buy affordable quality household goods as well as divert used goods from landfills. All proceeds are donated to the Bible League Canada to support its worldwide work of Bible placement.
The Halifax BFM Thrift Store building is a beautiful clean & bright new store; it is approximately 16,000 square feet which includes about 5,000 square feet of warehouse space. We opened our doors on March 22, 2014 after over two years of planning, prayers and preparation by the Steering Committee. The Store sits on 2.44 acres of land in Lower Sackville, NS and it is conveniently located near a shopping centre in a business area of the community.
As Canada’s leading child and youth mentoring charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates life-changing relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential, both as individuals and citizens.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Halifax has been creating friendships since 1967. We started out matching Big Brothers with Little Brothers and have grown to include a variety of different programs that serve both boys and girls. We are proud of our achievements and continue to strive to be on the leading edge of the Big Brothers Big Sisters movement in Canada.
Parker Street Food Bank provides help to people in need. We are a food and furniture bank, but strongly believe in the adage, "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". Some of the opportunities for self-sufficiency have included courses in flooring installation, windows and doors installation, automotive parts clerk, siding, carpenter's assistant training and basic computer skills. We also provide back packs filled with school supplies for young students in September and at Christmas time we provide the ingredients for a traditional turkey dinner as well as toys for the wee ones. We also operate an Emergency Fund to help those in financial crisis, such as helping with utility or heating bills.
Coverdale Courtwork Society
Coverdale Coutwork Society is an organization that provides supports and services for women involved in or at risk of becoming involved in, the criminal justice system. We provide year-round programming in education, awareness and prevention that actively promotes healthy lifestyles. Perhaps most importantly we provide a safe and supportive space in which women from throughout the HRM can grow to become strong, empowered, and productive women.
Kids Help Phone is a Canadian service and world leader known for our expertise and continuous innovation as Canada’s only 24/7 counselling and information service for young people. Since 1989, our trained, professional counsellors have been listening to kids, often when no one else can or will. We are always there – supporting young people wherever and whenever they need us most.
Our free and anonymous service supports young people as they build the skills and abilities they’ll need to improve their emotional health and well-being. In addition to an array of counselling options, we offer young people a wide range of online resources and we work tirelessly to share young people’s perspectives on a societal level – locally, nationally, and globally.
We could not do this important, life-changing work without the generous support of our donors and sponsors. Kids Help Phone raises the majority of our revenue from foundational, corporate, and individual donations. Thanks to our generous donors we can always be there, proudly supporting the 6.5 million young people in Canada between the ages of five and 20 in both English and French.
The Loaded Ladle provides accessible, sustainable, locally-sourced free food on Dalhousie Campus. Our non-hierarchical co-operative offers an alternative food service, that opposes capitalist food systems. We also offer events and workshops that critically examine barriers to food sovereignty, food security and food justice.
Phoenix has been helping youth, families and the community thrive since 1987. We provide care and opportunities for individuals, and create conditions where they can thrive and bring those qualities to their full potential. We are dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of youth in a respectful, dignified, and innovative manner, while also being a voce of social justice in their lives. Our programs can now be captures in three important areas: Crises Management (emergency shelter, health services, counselling, drop-in centre), Community based Prevention (clinical therapy, outreach and community development) and Housing and Employment Skills (employment and education, parent support, trustee program, recreation and arts, independent and semi-independent housing).
Out of the Cold is a community-based, volunteer-run organization that works to provide shelter & community supports to the homeless & precariously housed. The specific work for the 2015-2016 season is being planned currently, and this website is under construction.
Red Bear Healing Home is a non-profit society registered with the Province of Nova Scotia (June 23, 2011). Red Bear Healing Home is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and managed by an Executive Director.
