IM Public Lecture: Dr. Kevin Absillis (Dalhousie University)

Category:
Dates: November 4, 2014 - November 4, 2014

It is remarkable that all major early modern utopias – from Thomas More’s Utopia (1516), to Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis (1624) and Tommaso Campanella’s The City of the Sun (1623) – explicitly pay tribute to the invention of the printing press. At least as remarkable is the fact that in 20th century dystopic fiction the destruction of books and the decline of the printing press are a crucial part of the nightmare they represent. One immediately thinks of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1948), Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and, perhaps, of E.M. Forster’s short story ‘The Machine Stops’ (1909). This very motive is also taken up in a fair number of movies, e.g. Rollerball (1975, dir. N. Jewison), Minority Report (2002, dir. S. Spielberg), Equilibrium (2002, dir. K. Wimmer), V for Vendetta (2006, dir. J. McTeigh), The Book of Eli (2010, dir. Hughes Brothers). In my talk I will investigate this topical relationship between the printing press/books! and utopian fiction in order to assess a by no means purely ‘fictitious’ fear that our so-called Gutenberg Galaxy is currently coming to an end.

The University of King's College Chapel Choir, under the direction of Grammy award-winning musician Paul Halley, will kick off its 2014-15 King’s at the Cathedral concert series with a Canadian premiere performance of a 500-year-old piece, the Requiem Mass by 15th-century composer Pierre de la Rue (1452 – 1518). De la Rue was the leading composer at the Burgundy-Habsburg court during the golden age of medieval polyphony and his Requiem evokes the majesty and mystery of that time. Composed around 1500, the piece is one of the earliest polyphonic requiem masses to survive to this day.

The performance will showcase period instruments alongside the singers and will put the architectural features and hidden spaces of All Saints Cathedral to full use. will also feature music for the season by Renaissance composers di Lasso and Palestrina, and 20th-century composers Elgar, Pärt, and Halley himself.

Tickets for the Halifax performance are $15 student(***BUT SEE SPECIAL DEAL BELOW), $20 general, $40 priority, and $100 patron and are available in advance at www.kingschapelchoir.eventbrite.ca or from the King’s Co-op Bookstore at 902.422.1270 ext. 261.

The Pointer Sisters (Casino Nova Scotia)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 25, 2014 - October 25, 2014

Tickets:Guest Services & Ticket Atlantic
Price:General Admission: $48.91 (plus hst & service charges)

Casino Nova Scotia is excited to announce Grammy Award winning group, The Pointer Sisters, live in the Schooner Showroom October 25!

The Pointer Sisters were as chameleonic as David Bowie, if not more so. The sibling group backed Grace Slick and Boz Scaggs, made stops at Sesame Street and the Grand Ole Opry, won a country Grammy, and appeared in the movie Car Wash, all before scoring four consecutive Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 hits in the mid-‘80s. From their early ‘70s releases on Blue Thumb through their ‘80s commercial run on Planet and RCA, the Pointers moved through boogie-woogie, bebop, blues, country, funk, disco, soft rock, electro-pop, hard rock, and several other subgenres as if they were all second nature. The sisters covered Willie Dixon, were covered by Elvis Presley, and released 15 Top 40 Hot 100 singles while sustaining a steady presence on the R&B, club, and adult contemporary charts.
The Pointer Sisters grew up listening to and singing gospel music. The sisters’ parents were deeply spiritual with their father, Reverend Elton Pointer, and their mother being active in their local church. The sisters were discouraged by their parents from listening to rock and roll and the blues. Singing on a regular basis at church, the sisters were comfortable performing from an early age. June was the first sister to venture outside of the norm musically and introduced her older sisters to Elvis Presley. After graduating high school, Ruth and Anita were already married with children, Bonnie and June set their sights on a career in show business.

After the success of their debut album, the sisters followed-up with their second offering, “That’s a Plenty,” which spawned the song “Fairytale,” earning the sisters an invite to perform at Grand Ole Opry, and a Grammy Award for ‘Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal’ in 1975. The sisters had arrived, their fan base swelled overnight and they were a sensation. Their song would later be covered by Elvis Presley. Their fourth album, “Steppin’“ arrived in 1975 and produced another Grammy nominated single, “How Long (Betcha’ Got a Chick on the Side).” By 1977, both June and Bonnie had left the group, and Ruth and Anita slowed down their schedules to accommodate their growing families. June returned to the fold in 1978 as the sisters released “Energy.”

1980 saw the sisters release the massive hit single, “He’s So Shy,” which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Charts. In 1983, The Pointer Sisters released what became their biggest-selling album ever with “Break Out.” The sisters took advantage of the recently launched MTV to reach out and expose their music to new audiences. A slew of hit singles, peaking in the top ten followed throughout the 1980s, with a Grammy Award for ‘Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal’ for their hit single “Jump (For My Love),” and another Grammy for ‘Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices’ for the single “Automatic.” Towards the end of the 1980s the sisters switched over to Motown Records. The 1990s saw the sisters return to a more jazz orientated sound in their music. By 2002 Issa Pointer, Ruth’s daughter began performing with the Pointer Sisters in the place of June.

depth.

This year the exhibition will begin on Thursday, October 16th, 2014 from 7-9 pm, with a preview between 6-7 pm, until Sunday, November 2nd, 2014 at the Craig Gallery, Alderney Landing, Dartmouth, NS.

The submission deadline to be included in our Annual Mosaic Poster is Monday, September 22nd, 2014.
Every effort will be made to have one tile from each artist (submitted by September 22nd) on the poster. The size of the tile on the poster will depend on the number of individual artists. Final submission deadline for tiles is Wednesday, October 8th, 2014. If you cannot submit your tiles by this deadline, please give our office a call (455-5445) to make other arrangements.

All submissions will become the property of CMHA, Halifax-Dartmouth Branch and will be available for sale at $25.00 each. Artists wishing to have their business cards available at the gallery during the Art Sale and Exhibition should submit them to us along with your artwork.

The Faculty of Management is holding an information session to learn about the benefits of Mentorship and register for the 2014/2015 cohort.

This session will speak to the Rowe School of Business Mentoring Program which allows alumni to share their experiences and expertise with Management, Commerce and MBA students who are exploring career options and developing the tools to become successful young professionals. This is also a chance for SRES students to learn about the benefits of a mentoring experience as a similar program will be launching!

This program pairs students with alumni mentors who act as a pillar of advice and wisdom for students who are looking to define their career path, explore job/co-op opportunities and expand their network. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to jump start their careers with the help of experienced professionals.

Join us for this information session that will detail the benefits of becoming a mentee for the 2014/2015 Academic year. The dress code is professional, and food will be provided.
