Hear our premiere performances of four compelling new works: Canadian composer Jeffrey Ryan's Juno-nominated Pangaea, Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina's mystical Piano Concerto, Anton Webern's meditative Symphony, Op. 21, and the world premiere of a brand-new composition from Halifax's own Jerome Blais, written especially for our orchestra.

Floyd King (The Old Triangle)

Floyd King is a seasoned veteran of the Atlantic Canadian club circuit and a tremendously skilled songwriter. His song “Come Home To Nova Scotia” won out over more than two hundred other submissions for selection as the theme in Nova Scotia’s Old Home Summer campaign to increase tourism to the province. The novelty song “Give Me Money For Christmas” is still played each holiday season more than fifteen years after it was recorded. He has appeared on radio and on television many times, including spots on the Tommy Hunter Show and the CCMA Awards Show.

His work producing and co-writing songs on several Terry Kelly CD’s helped to win awards from the ECMA, the CCMA and from SOCAN. Floyd pleases audiences throughout the province singing songs from a repertoire that includes music from Stan Rogers to the Beatles and makes many stops in between

Rowdy Dow (The Old Triangle)

Raised on the fiddle and guitar in rural Cape Breton Island, it is not surprising that Vince grew up to be a performer. A seasoned entertainer Vince has performed with many bands and has more than twenty years experience as a lead singer, bass player and rhythm guitar player, performing rock, Celtic, country, and bluegrass.

Vince has toured Ontario, the Maritimes and Denmark with popular bands such as Three Piece Suit, Miller’s Jug and Breton.

On his contemporary rock side he was also a founding member of Hocus Pocus, a well known Cape Breton based rock group who went to second place in the battle of the bands and also had the unique distinction of “almost” opening for Trooper.

For the past several years Vince has gained a loyal following as a member of The Crew performing at venues such as The Old Triangle, The Celtic Corner, Finbar’s and O’Carrol’s to name a few.

A well respected songwriter he is often in demand for his Bass playing, strong vocals and harmonies and he has lent his talent to several recordings. Vince has a unique vocal style and range that lends itself to any type of music and his high energy performance always leaves the audience wanting more.

Experience the magic of this timeless classic, featuring local jazz legend and original member of the Vince Guaraldi Trio, Jerry Granelli.Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas, a Halifax Jazz Festival fundraiser for music education, takes place at 2 PM and 8 PM Sunday, December 7. Experience the magic of the holiday season with timeless music that will warm your heart. Back by popular demand, the Halifax Jazz Festival presents Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas featuring local jazz legend Jerry Granelli, an original and only surviving member of the Vince Guaraldi Trio. This special show will create memories that will last forever. One family who watched the production's premiere in 2013 told us "it felt like Jerry wrapped his long arms around everyone and reminded us of what counts". Relive this classic and experience the music with the musician who was a part of its inception.

The Vince Guaraldi Trio scored and performed the original recording of A Charlie Brown Christmas. Although the program was criticized before going to air, it was an instant success. Prior to its debut, producers were worried it was too religious, and the soundtrack which featured Guaraldi Trio's contemporary jazz was too cutting edge for children's programming. Since the television special's debut in 1965, the music has gone on to become an iconic soundtrack for the holiday season.

Granelli is no stranger to the Halifax Jazz Festival audiences, and is one of three parts of the Jerry Granelli Trio which also includes Calgary's Simon Fisk on bass and Vancouver's Chris Gestrin on piano. For this special performance, the Jerry Granelli Trio is joined by HRM's Vivace Children's Choir, conducted by Krista Vincent.

Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas is the Halifax Jazz Festival's 11th annual fundraiser for music education. The Halifax Jazz Festival extends a warm welcome to families to share in the festivities. During the matinee performance one child (12 and under) may accompany an adult for free.

Holiday Party Potluck & Toy Drive Fundraiser (Halifax International Social Society)

Celebrating the Year & Holiday!

This is one of our biggest events of the year and filled with lots of prizes, games, donations and fun times! All are welcome. At this event we do a collection for the Salvation Army Toy Drive and deliver the toys as a group.

Everyone is asked to bring a new unwrapped toy that is appropriate for a child. We also fund raise and donate to the Salvation Army to help families in need during the holiday season.

We will also be giving a prize to the person with the best Holiday Sweater - so let's get creative!!

In addition to the food and activities, we will be enjoying a holiday movie. (One holiday movie for children and one holiday movie for the adults) There are separate viewing areas and popcorn will be provided. Please bring your own non-alcoholic drinks.

At the event we will have a 50/50 draw, where someone will win 50% of the take, as well we will be selling tickets for our prize draws. We have over $800 in prizes to give away this year to ticket winners!
