National Inside Ride Tour (Dalhousie Commerce Society, IWK Foundation, Camp Goodtime, Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation)

Category: Fundraisers and Volunteer
Dates: October 1, 2015 - October 1, 2015

The IWK Foundation and Camp Goodtime have partnered with the Dalhousie Commerce Society and Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation to bring the National Inside Ride, Halifax. This is an exceptional event that raises funds for children and their families living with and beyond cancer, and we want you to be part of it!

Join us and help raise funds to support children bravely fighting cancer. Our goal this year is to raise $30,000—our most ambitious goal to date, but we need your help!

The Inside Ride is a charitable event that involves riding stationary bikes. This year’s event is taking place on Thursday, October 1st at 3:00pm (Team Captain Check-in 2pm) at the King’s College Gymnasium (6250 Coburg Rd) so there is plenty of time to recruit a team (of 6 people) and start fundraising (team goal of $500-$1000)! On the event day, each team will be riding for a total of 1 hour so each member will only have to bike for 10 minutes. Easy right? It’s high energy, fun, and an amazing way to spend an afternoon – all while supporting children that are fighting cancer.

Want to join in the fun? Team Captains please contact Amy at external@dalcomm.ca to confirm registration and you will be given team captain packages.

We sincerely hope you are able to participate. This is a fantastic initiative and it is our pleasure and privilege to be hosting the Halifax event again this year.

Lunenburg Doc Fest presents Crows and Branches by Millefiore Clarkes ()

Category:
Dates: September 21, 2015 - September 27, 2015

Crows and Branches is an experimental video that meditates on the wonder of the movement of nature. In Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, there occurs a daily natural phenomenon. At dusk thousands of crows appear, as if out of no where, in the sky over the city, and flock to Victoria Park at the water's edge. They amass in such numbers that they turn entire trees black and fill the sky with a symphony of haunting cries. Crows and Branches is a homage to this wonder. It is a ritual that affects every citizen of Charlottetown, despite ongoing attempts to disperse the birds out of duty to gleaming cars and unsullied lawns. It is a daily reminder to look up. We are bound to our earth and its rhythms.,Millefiore Clarkes, 3:55, 2009, Canada,FREE!,Lunenburg Doc Fest is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to showcasing documentary films that entertain, educate, inspire and enrich the lives of Lunenburg citizens and visitors. The 2015 edition of the Lunenburg Doc Fest runs September 25-27.

Terri-Lyn Hohenadel: Senses Exposed Opening Night ()

Category:
Dates: September 3, 2015 - September 9, 2015

"I present to you a glimpse of my vision as I've wandered through this beautiful world of ours. For me these images captured more than a spot in time, they reflect all that I've encompassed on my life journey thus far. My wish is that you go away remembering to absorb with all your senses, and truly see with all of your eyes.,Before: That first moment of witnessing a black and white image appear on a plain piece of paper in a bath of solution brought light to my eyes and a smile to my face while thinking 'I made that happen'. I was hooked and I set out to find any person that could teach me the ropes. With the guidance of the high school auto shop teacher and the approval of my grade eleven chemistry teacher I pursued my interest and creative outlet of photography. I had found my path and I moved on to achieve my diploma in Photography as well as a second in Digital Imagery.,After: Two decades of professional Photography and Digital Imaging has lead me to collaborate with international productions teams across the globe...from London, England to Cape Town, South Africa. Travel quickly became an integral part of my career and who I am. My perspective changed along the way and capturing on film or file was no longer the goal. My aspiration to see this world with my own eyes was still high on my list. Though now it was fused with a craving to discover its hidden gems utilizing all my senses. To see its hue, smell its fragrance, taste its bitterness, touch its texture, and hear its weather...,Now: My imagery depicts a detail. A mere fragment composed of the time leading up to, during, and following the click of the shutter. Exposing all my senses." - Terri-Lyn Hohenadel

Unable to escape, he calmly, deliberately - with very little desperation at all, mind you! - attempts to keep his spirits up, by holding a pretend press conference, describing his incredible escape. Wending from calmly reasoning his way out, to the depths of existential angst, to a very odd encounter with a helpful bird, Nash’s inspiring story will make you laugh, make you think, and, above all, make you watch where you step!,Playwright, actor, and director Morris Panych is a man for all seasons in Canadian theatre. He has directed over eighty productions, and written more than two dozen plays that have been produced across Canada, Britain, and the United States. His works, include 7 Stories, Vigil, and Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, for which he won the 2004 Governor General’s award for Drama. Known for his deep themes, witty dialogue, and accessible “theatre of the absurd” aesthetic, Morris Panych’s work is characterized by a comic oscillation between hope and despair.,Directed by Dorian Lang, with Stage Management by Olivia McGinn, The Story of a Sinking Man will be performed at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (1675 Lower Water Street, Halifax, NS), as part of the 25th Annual Atlantic Fringe Festival. 4th North Atlantic Zebrafish Research Symposium (Dalhousie University)

Category:
Dates: June 8, 2015 - June 8, 2015

This will be the 4th year for this biannual meeting that brings together researchers from across the Maritime provinces and northern New England who use the zebrafish to model human diseases including cancer, blood disorders, and infections with a goal of exploiting the conserved genetics and superior imaging capabilities of this organism to better understand these diseases and find novel therapies.

Previous keynote speakers have included Dr. Pierre Drapeau (U de Montreal), Dr. Tom Look (Harvard Medical School/Dana Farber Cancer Institute), Dr. John Postlethwait (U of Oregon), Dr. Melody Neely (Wayne State University) and Dr. David Tobin (Duke U).

This year’s meeting with feature keynote speaker, Dr. Stephen C. Ekker, the Director, Mayo Addiction Research Center, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Editor-in-Chief, Zebrafish Mayo Clinic Cancer Center is a leader in the field.

On average 80 – 100 attendees are expected, who through oral presentations, poster sessions and social events, this meeting has tremendous capacity to enhance collaborations and advance scientific discoveries that ultimately have the potential to improve the treatment and outcome for children and adults in the region suffering from cancer, infections and immune-mediated diseases.

This year’s theme will be genomic technologies. Two hands-on workshops have been added to the schedule : Genome Editing and Bioinformatics.

We encourage anyone who does not presently use the zebrafish model but would be interested in future collaborations to come to this year's meeting.

Growth of the soul is our goal, and there are many ways to encourage that growth, such as through love, nature, healing our wounds, forgiveness, and service. The soul grows well when giving and receiving love. I nourish my soul daily by loving others and being vulnerable to their love. Love is, after all, a verb, an action word, not a noun.
