Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Docents and Guides

If you have a passion for art and love sharing it with people, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is the place for you. Take this opportunity to meet new people from all walks of life and join our committed and energetic team as a docent or gallery guide. Our volunteers are invaluable in helping us to promote access for visitors to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. We are currently looking for individuals interested in becoming volunteer docents or gallery guides. This is your chance to help inspire and connect visitors with the artworks on view at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. While docents and guides differ in function, both groups interpret art, guide people through the Gallery, encourage dialogue, provide information to visitors, and facilitate understandings about art Docents primarily lead school groups on tours of the Gallery, by animating the collection in dynamic ways for learners of all ages. Gallery guides conduct the daily public tour, by interpreting the collection and exhibitions through conversations with visitors from around the neighbourhood and around the world. We will provide you with all the necessary training to carry out your volunteer role with confidence and enthusiasm. Training will include learning about our collection through behind-the-scenes tours, talks with curator and artists, studio demonstrations, and lively discussions about the art. Docents meet every Monday morning for training, and deliver an additional tour every 1-2 weeks (usually during the work week) Guides meet every Monday afternoon for training and deliver an additional tour a week. These tours take place daily at 2:30 and on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm.

Fun research project for 2-14 year olds and a parent!

Bluenose Ghosts Festival Volunteer Positions

Organization: Alderney Landing Community Cultural Centre

Description: In-House Character will stay in character and scare patrons as they go through the house. This role is physically demanding, exposed to loud noises, special effects, fog and screaming is required. Ride Operator is to gather tickets at the door of attraction and manage the flow of traffic. Involves keeping count of users, crowd control and entertaining guests. Line Entertainer will entertain/scare guests waiting in line to enter the attraction. Involves crowd control and being outgoing. Volunteers to guide guests with additional needs through the attractions safely. Requires experience working with children and people with various special needs. Ticket Sellers are to sell tickets to attractions. Involves using point of purchase terminal, handling cash and math. Volunteer Relief could provide short-term relief to other volunteers for washroom/snack breaks and is also available to step in to any role as determined necessary by the Volunteer Coordinator. Promo Team needs to assist with street promotion of the festival including live tweeting from the event, passing out marketing materials, attending promotional events and other promotional needs. Costume Assistant needs to assist the Volunteer Coordinator in transforming volunteer actors into characters. Volunteers needed by AUG 20 for health research at IWK Health Centre in Halifax

Description: Volunteers needed: 18 to 65 years of age You may be eligible to participate if you have been diagnosed with asthma for at least 6 months and your asthma symptoms worsen when you have a cold. Other criteria will be assessed by the study doctor. Reimbursed $120 for each visit at the IWK Health Centre, including 2 screening visits to determine eligibility for the study. Eligible participants are required for another 10 visits including a 5-day stay at the IWK Health Centre in a private room with Internet, cable tv & phone, all meals, fridge and reimbursement of $1800 for this 5-day stay. www.vaccineresearch.ca

Food Run Volunteer

LINKS Program Literacy Instructor

Description: LINKS is a children's literacy program that is seeking volunteers for the 2014-2015 school year. Terms start September 22nd 2014. The LINKS program provides one on one and small group literacy instruction to students in grades primary to six that need extra support in literacy skills development. We teach students in the areas of phonological awareness, reading comprehension, reading fluency, and writing. Fall term runs September-December, Winter runs January-March and Spring runs March-June. Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour sessions, two times per week for a total of 2 hours per week or 20 hours per term. Full LINKS Training will be provided before the LINKS term begins. In Home Senior Support Coordinator

Description: ElderDog Halifax is looking for a volunteer to fill the In-Home Senior Support Coordinator position in our pawd. The In-Home Senior Support Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the volunteers who go in to the homes of our seniors to provide dog care activities. Responsibilities for the Coordinator include: Matching volunteers with the appropriate senior (based on skill, dog comfort level, and location etc.) Making introductions between the volunteers and seniors Monitoring volunteer and senior satisfaction in their placements Being a connection between the seniors’ dog(s) needs and our service providers We meet as a leadership team at least once a month to coordinate and discuss progress within our pawd and the larger national level organization. Our pawd works as a team so there is lots of support along the way. We are all volunteers and most of us work full time – so we’re sensitive to the fact that you probably will be as well. We’d also be open to having two co-coordinators if preferred. The main skills needed are comfort and experience with dogs, and excellent communication skills. Comfort with seniors is of course required as is tact and discretion. Access to a car is extremely helpful. Volunteers Needed for Best Dressed Quacker Contest

Description: The corporate ducks for the Alzheimer Society’s Alzheimer Duck Derby are all dressed up and ready to be shown off! From September 12-13, we will be at Mic Mac mall with our Best Dressed Quacker Contest. This provides a chance for people to see the corporate ducks all decorated, vote for their favorite and adopt their lucky duck for race day. We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to help us out. Volunteers will encourage people to visit the display and help with the voting process. We will have two shifts per day: Friday, September 12: 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, September 13: 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. If you are able to help out, please e-mail Michele.charlton@asns.ca as soon as possible with the shift you are able to work.
