What is a Passkey?
A Passkey is a modern cryptographic replacement for passwords. Instead of typing a password, you use your device's built-in security—such as Fingerprint (Touch ID), Face Recognition (Face ID), or your device PIN / Passcode—to sign into Volunteer Halifax.

Passkeys cannot be stolen by fake websites or trick emails because they are bound to our domain.

Apple Keychain, 1Password, and Google Password Manager automatically sync your passkeys across devices.
How to Set Up a Passkey

Go to Security Settings
Log in and navigate to your account settings via the profile menu.

Click 'Add Passkey / Security Key'
Your browser will trigger your device prompt (Touch ID, Face ID, or Security Key).

Confirm Biometrics
Scan your fingerprint or face to register your device. Next time you sign in, simply click 'Sign in with Passkey'!
What are Recovery Codes?
Recovery Codes are 10 single-use emergency backup codes generated when you set up Multi-Factor Authentication. If you ever lose your phone or security key, you can enter one of these codes on the 2FA login screen to regain access to your account.
Important Security Note
Always download and store your recovery codes in a secure location (such as a password manager or printed file). If you lose both your passkey device and recovery codes, you will need to contact our support team to verify your identity.
