Being a Caring Colleague: How to speak up about another’s mental health

Thursday, January 12, 2017 9:00am – 12:00pm Room 224, Student Union Building Given what we know about the statistics, chances are you work with someone who is dealing with mental health issues. Colleagues often notice signs of challenges with mental health before supervisors and managers. Most people are caring and want to help but don’t know how. Should I respect their privacy and let it be? How do I ask questions? How can I even help? The majority of us are uncomfortable asking questions or having conversations about this topic. Often times, the first step is to overcome our own fears or beliefs so we can get comfortable having difficult conversations about mental health. Raising your comfort level and being compelled to reach out to a colleague will help create a culture of caring! In this session, we will discuss: – How to ask tough questions about another’s mental health – Making an observation – Non-judgmental listening – How can I help? – When and how to enlist support
