Opportunity Description:

Are you looking for a flexible opportunity to volunteer, while seeing the real-life impact you’re making? The CNIB Foundation has the position for you! As a Vision Mates, you are paired with a person who is blind or living with partial vision to help with sighted tasks. At the start, you will be limited to talking on the phone and – if it’s needed – dropping off groceries. However, once it is safe to do so, your visits will take place in your match’s home or community and may include things like reading books or newspapers, organizing things around the home, going for walks, or assisting with errands. You effectively act like the person’s eyes; observing and describing what is required to empower the person to accomplish the tasks at hand. To see a list of people we’re looking to match, visit: http://cnib.ca/en/support-us/volunteer/roles-and-opportunities?region=ns Our current volunteers find the role both easy (it feels like visiting a friend) and flexible (visits are scheduled between the volunteer and their match at a mutually convenient time). The relationship between vision mate and match often transitions from “helper-helpee” to “friends” and for this reason their age, gender, interests, and travel distance play a role in making the match. Training is provided. If you’re interested in learning about blindness or helping a person with sight loss on a weekly basis, email jeff.deviller@cnib.ca to receive an application! *** Commitment & Screening You meet for one to two hours a week at a time that works for both you and your match. We aim to match people for a minimum of six months, though there is no maximum time for a match to continue and ideally it will continue for years to come. Locations Matches are needed in communities throughout the HRM, as well as Amherst, Antigonish, Berwick, Bridgewater, Digby, Lawrencetown, Port Hawkesbury, Sydney, Tusket, and Yarmouth. Visits take place over the phone but will move to in-person visits when it is safe to do so! Next Steps Interested in volunteering for this position? Email jeff.deviller@cnib.ca and he’d be happy to answer any of your questions!
