The Bedford- Sackville Learning Network is a Community Learning Organization funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education and a partner in the Nova Scotia School of Adult Learning (NSSAL). We provide free classroom instruction and tutoring services to adults who wish to upgrade their reading, writing, math, and computer skills. Most of our learners are adults who haven’t achieved their high school diploma. We rely on our volunteer tutors to assist the many adult learners who prefer to work in a one on one setting, and those who are unable to attend our classroom program due to work and home responsibilities. Our volunteer tutors usually work one on one with an adult learner for a two hour session once a week, and additional time is required for lesson planning and preparation. The main trait we look for in a tutor is patience. We always meet in a public setting, such as the libraries. We provide training and on-going support to our tutors.
