Opportunity Description:

Start2Finish’s mission is to break the cycle of child poverty by providing ongoing educational support to Canada’s at risk children throughout their school years, nurturing mind, body and social health so they are empowered to succeed and become role models for change.  This mission is achieved by our dedicated volunteers and mentor Coaches. The programs at Start2Finish encourage literacy, healthy active living, and play. The program runs from October to May one afternoon a week for two hours. Volunteers support students in various fitness and reading activities. As a result, students stay in school, build self-confidence and develop positive friendships with mentors and peers. With mentor Coaches, students discover the possibilities of a brighter future.  Information to highlight: – Program runs from October to May; there is room for flexibility in the length of time to volunteer – Children in the Running & Reading Club are 6 -13 years old; from grades 1-6 – You do not have to be a runner to volunteer, there is something for everyone! – The time commitment is one afternoon per week for 2.5 hours  The mentor’s role includes: –        Supervising and encouraging the children through the physical activity component of the program  –       Help to distribute snack to the students after the physical activity component –        Word of the Day: Each volunteer has the opportunity to explain a “Word of the Day” for the whole group.  –        Journal: Volunteers assist children to record their accomplishments in both running and reading each week. –        Reading: Volunteers supervise as children read silently, read one-on-one with children or lead group reading, listen to them read and providing help and encouragement.  *A weekly program guide is provided  **Contact by phone or email; toll free number is 1-888-320-8844 ext. 206   Program locations include: Central Spryfield Elementary School, Tuesdays 3:00-5:00 pm Chebucto Heights Elementary School, Thursdays 3:10-5:20 pm St. Joseph Alexander McKay School, Wednesdays 3:15-5:15 pm Harbour View School, Tuesdays 2:45-4:45 pm
