Volunteer Job Description Position: Rogers Raising the Grade Tutor Reports to: Education Manager Hours of Work: 1 evening a week, 1 full school term commitment (Sept–June) Mondays or Thursdays (5:30-8:30 pm) or Tuesdays 5:30-6:30 pm Basic Qualifications: Must have some experience or training with youth ages 13-18. Must have basic computer skills. Current First Aid and CPR certification is an asset. Criminal records check and vulnerable sector searches are mandatory. Must be have experience tutoring/knowledge in a specific subject area (Junior and Senior High School level: Math, English, Social Studies, Science & French Immersion). Position Profile: Rogers Raising the Grade is an interactive after-school program that allows youth to explore interests, receive homework support, connect with mentors/tutors, interact with peers, and increase their digital literacy and plan for post-secondary education. We are looking for volunteers who have a passion for working with youth and also enjoy using innovative technology. Tutors would work with youth on a weekly basis to provide homework and academic support when needed. Tutors would also encourage youth to reach their academic goals. Dimensions and Tasks: Provide academic and homework support in various subjects to youth who require assistance. Encourage and coach teens to achieve their goals Navigate the RRTG website to help participants find and use relevant educational resources Help ensure the Rogers Raising the Grade Tech Centre remains a safe and welcoming space for youth by being supportive and encouraging. àEnsure that youth abide by the RRTG Tech Centre use and safety policies. Provide support and encouragement while keeping youth focused and engaged Demonstrate professionalism by being a strong leader, enforcing and abiding by club rules, setting boundaries and ensuring safety of youth at all times. Maintain a clean, safe and structured environment for youth, volunteers and staff. Desired Attributes Knowledge: Experience and knowledge of interests and abilities of youth ages 13-18 years. Knowledge and proficient use of technology and computer software. Familiarity with “youth at risk” and knowledgeable of the effects of poverty Knowledge of a specific academic subject and experience with tutoring. Ability: Effectively communicates and relates to youth ages 13-18 years. Effectively provide academic support to youth. Effectively able to problem solve with youth. Ability to adapt academic programming to meet needs of participants. Effectively engages and motivates youth to try their best.
