Opportunity Description:

We are looking for volunteer tutors who have a passion to help others succeed in life. Our programs take place in community centers, schools, and family resource centers throughout HRM. The volunteer can count on participating in any one of the following activities with the learner: Completing homework assignments Studying for tests Engaging in creative writing activities Preparing for projects Improving study skills Working on math facts and concepts Improving French language skills Providing reading support Supporting adults with their English Language skills You do not need teaching experience to be a Frontier College tutor. We believe everyone can help other people improve their literacy or English language skills. If you are accepted as a Frontier College volunteer, we will train you to be a tutor. We will also provide support and resources for you during your tutoring. Frontier College tutors should: Be committed. We ask tutors to volunteer for a minimum of six months once they have been trained. Have time available for volunteering. Tutoring sessions usually take place once a week and last two to three hours. It is important to attend tutoring sessions consistently. Be open to a variety of people and new experiences Be fluent in English Be enthusiastic, patient, flexible and creative We have several programs in the Halifax Regional Municipality and you can choose the location and program that best suits your interests. We only ask for a 1 1/2 to 2 hour commitment each week. We are currently recruiting for our fall and winter programs. Our volunteers will complete an orientation, interview, backcheck and training prior to being placed. Programs begin in early October.
