Opportunity Description:

Interested in helping community members connect with and learn about urban gardening? Do you have a love of plants or teaching others? We’re looking for one or two people who have a keen eye and are interested in helping to create content for interactive signs for the beautiful gardens at Common Roots Urban Farm. This role will require the team members to take a tour of the gardens to note of where signs could help visitors gain greater insight and enjoyment of the space. The Assistant(s) will then take this information and pull together the draft content for the signs which will be used in gardens throughout the next year. For participants with design experience, there is also the opportunity to be involved in phase two, which is electronically drafting the signs. What you bring: You have a keen eye and an ability to recognize learning opportunities. You are a lover of plants and have a real appreciation for green space in the city. You work well independently and are comfortable gathering information through independent research. Basic gardening experience and knowledge on urban gardening an asset, but not necessary. When and where: Common Roots Urban Farm is located in front of the QEII Emergency Hospital on the corner of Bell Rd and Robie St. The tour of the garden would happen as soon as possible (while there is still lots of life left in the gardens), with the research taking place on your own time. How we’ll support you: The site tour will be provided by one of the garden coordinators to help you identify areas that could use signage. Garden coordinators are available to provide guidance and feedback. Perks: This position provides an opportunity to increase your knowledge on urban gardening and plant identification, while putting to great use your research skills and creative eye. Next steps: Submit your Evergreen volunteer application online and apply for the Urban Garden Educational Assistant here. Contact Julia at halifax@evergreen.ca for more information.
