Opportunity Description:

Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia Volunteer Opportunity   Green Burial Society of Nova Scotia (GBSNS)  is on its way to incorporating as a nonprofit organization.  The vision of our Society is that green burial  and other eco-friendly disposition practices are the preferred choice for Nova Scotians.   GBSNS  works to raise awareness and accessibility of green burial options in Nova Scotia.  Through education and advocacy we help Nova Scotians understand and recognize the environmental benefits of green burial.   Green burial is the act of returning a body as naturally as possible to the earth using less energy and resources, making it lower impact than conventional burials or cremation.  Green burials are also less toxic, reduce carbon emissions, and protect worker health.  Green burial minimizes environmental impacts, conserves and can even restore or preserve natural ecosystems.  It offers an opportunity to carry one’s living values into death.   Board Secretary (Volunteer Role) The board secretary is a non-voting member of the board and reports to the Board.   Time Commitment 8-10 hours month (board meetings and secretarial duties as described below)   Term of Office Two years   Duties and Responsibilities The Secretary works closely with the Board Chair in the planning of board and Society meetings and is responsible for ensuring the creation and timely distribution of the board meeting agenda and Society membership meetings (AGM) the accurate recording and distribution of the minutes of board meetings.  The minutes should reflect the format and level of detail as required by the board the creation and maintenance of an up-to-date board planning calendar, outlining matters to be on the agenda over the course of a year (e.g. approval of budget, report on board recruitment, AGM, as well as key events board members are expected to attend) maintenance of a full contact list of board members including board member appointment dates, term of appointments and board member bios updating, maintaining and safe storage of the Association’s minute book and other legal documents such as incorporation documents, bylaws, insurance policies and important contracts maintenance of an up-to-date list of members of the Society the accurate recording and distribution of the minutes of the Society’s Annual General Meeting   Qualifications A clear understanding and a commitment to the mission of GBSNS Preferably at least one year of relevant experience of working with a nonprofit Board Knowledge of meeting procedures An adequate level of writing proficiency and access to a computer for word processing   For more information, please contact Theresa Farrell, Volunteer Co-Coordinator  theresafarrell1099@gmail.com February
