Opportunity Description:

Join the Nature Conservancy of Canada and Bird Studies Canada to help prepare and maintain Johnston’s Pond beach for the return of nesting endangered Piping Plovers and other migratory birds. Situated between the Sable River and the Port L’Hebert Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Johnston’s Pond is an undisturbed estuary separated from the Atlantic Ocean by an extensive barrier beach. NCC currently protects 300 acres of beach and forested lands here. Help us clean the beaches of debris that interferes with the nesting success of shorebirds including the piping plovers, of which there are approximately only 6,000 left in the world. Johnston’s Pond also provides breeding habitat for spotted sandpipers and common terns and is home to migratory birds such as Canada geese, semi-palmated sandpipers, black-bellied plovers, sanderlings and ruddy turnstone. The work for the day will involve collecting and bagging trash of all sorts. We will only remove items that we can safely transport. Click here to read about last year’s Plover Prep event. Special Features: To further enhance your experience, you will be treated to an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the area for birdlife and Piping Plovers in particular, and to spend some time scanning the estuary and coastline for shorebirds and waterfowl. NCC’s partner in this event, Bird Studies Canada, coordinates monitoring and stewardship of Piping Plover at Johnston’s Pond and other coastal beaches in Nova Scotia and south east New Brunswick. Event Location: Meet at the Irving gas station in Sable River, NS just before Exit 23 on Highway 103.
