Next Stop Canada Mentor

Description: Program Description: Next Stop Canada (NSC) is a program that provides online settlement support, learning opportunities, and mentorship to pre-arrival clients who are destined for Canada. This online program helps individuals overseas prepare for immigration to Canada by providing them with the information, knowledge, and resources needed to quickly adapt and integrate into Canadian society. Major Duties: Next Stop Canada is an online portal for pre-arrival immigrants to virtually connect with professionals in Canada who are currently working in their desired field. All communication is done online via the Next Stop Canada platform, or via email with YMCA staff. Under the direct supervision of YMCA staff, volunteers: Answer questions from pre-arrival immigrants and recommend resources to help them with their career and settlement needs. Respond to questions within one week. Share immigration experiences and provide practical settlement tips to pre-arrival professionals. Qualifications Minimum age 23 Preferably has life experience as a newcomer. Post-secondary education and currently employed in specialized career industry (example: engineering, nursing, teaching etc.) Volunteers must be certified in their career field if industry standards require it. Experience and sensitivity in dealing with people from different cultural, racial and socio-economic backgrounds. Demonstrate some technological experience and usage of social media tools (i.e. Facebook, Twitter) Responsible, reliable and friendly while demonstrating a willingness to learn. Create a community projet - Become a RISE ambassador

If you're a youth aged 18-30, apply to join Apathy is Boring's RISE program starting in January 2021 Apathy is Boring is a national, youth-led organization that supports youth to become change-makers in their everyday lives and communities.   Our RISE program is designed for young people with little or no previous experience in volunteering. Yet! Over the course of 22 weeks as a RISE Ambassador, you will develop skills, learn about community engagement, and work with your peers to build something meaningful together.  The theme of this  RISE cohort is Gender Inclusion. For us, gender inclusion is about understanding and working to remove the barriers faced by folks with marginalized gender identities (i.e. two-spirit, trans, non-binary, women, etc). Fairview is in the urban core of Halifax and considered the most diverse neighbourhood east of Montreal. The population is approximately 12,000. The FRC started in 1986 and is a non-profit organization and registered charity. The centre has grown to offer a variety of programs and supports for all ages. Some of the programs include parenting support, youth programs, meal and food support, basic needs support, early learning and literacy support, peer support groups,  community wellness program and exercise groups, individual skill development, senior programs, referrals and advocacy and much more. The goal of FRC is to provide EDUCATION, OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT to the community. The centre offers community based, participant lead programs in a safe and welcoming environment. The centres serves over 500 different participants a year. ​ About You: ​ ​You are an enthusiast, compassionate, community minded individual who is looking to join a board that can make an immediate impact on the community we serve.  We are seeking individuals with a background through credentials, or experience, in human resources, public relations, fundraising/corporate relations and project management.  When joining our board we would like for all members to serve and minimum of 1 term (3 years), and have the option to serve a second term.  The board meets monthly from 6-8 pm and applicants are to be prepared for a second monthly meeting to complete committee work.
