Vision Mate

Organization: CNIB
Category: Social and Community Service
Description: Are you looking for a flexible opportunity to volunteer, while seeing the real-life impact you're making? The CNIB Foundation has the position for you! As a Vision Mates, you are paired with a person who is blind or living with partial vision to help with sighted tasks. At the start, you will be limited to talking on the phone and – if it’s needed – dropping off groceries. However, once it is safe to do so, your visits will take place in your match's home or community and may include things like reading books or newspapers, organizing things around the home, going for walks, or assisting with errands. You effectively act like the person's eyes; observing and describing what is required to empower the person to accomplish the tasks at hand. To see a list of people we’re looking to match, visit: http://cnib.ca/en/support-us/volunteer/roles-and-opportunities?region=ns Our current volunteers find the role both easy (it feels like visiting a friend) and flexible (visits are scheduled between the volunteer and their match at a mutually convenient time). The relationship between vision mate and match often transitions from "helper-helpee" to "friends" and for this reason their age, gender, interests, and travel distance play a role in making the match. Training is provided. If you’re interested in learning about blindness or helping a person with sight loss on a weekly basis, email jeff.deviller@cnib.ca to receive an application! *** Commitment & Screening You meet for one to two hours a week at a time that works for both you and your match. We aim to match people for a minimum of six months, though there is no maximum time for a match to continue and ideally it will continue for years to come. Locations Matches are needed in communities throughout the HRM, as well as Amherst, Antigonish, Berwick, Bridgewater, Digby, Lawrencetown, Port Hawkesbury, Sydney, Tusket, and Yarmouth. Visits take place over the phone but will move to in-person visits when it is safe to do so! Next Steps Interested in volunteering for this position? Email jeff.deviller@cnib.ca and he'd be happy to answer any of your questions!

CNIB Virtual Volunteer Roles

Organization: CNIB
Category: Administration / Clerical / Office
Description: Along with most of the country, the CNIB Foundation’s offices are closed and we’re all trying to do things a little differently. As a result, we have expanded our free virtual program offerings (e.g. career support, tech training, book clubs, youth groups) for Canadians impacted by blindness. We are also recruiting for a few new volunteer roles all of which can be completed from home or without breaking any social distancing requirements. If you're interested in helping out during this challenging and uncertain time, please consider volunteering for one of the following positions: Participant Caller As we continue to offer a variety of phone programs, our potential participants without emails require promotional calls to notify them of up-coming programs and to share with them the call-in phone number. We are looking for volunteer callers who could take a list and call people from their home weekly with up-coming events. Phone-a-Friend Coordinator The CNIB Foundation in Nova Scotia is exploring offering our members a Phone-a-Friend program that would form small groups out of our interested members to individually call each other for socialization and connection. We are looking for a volunteer coordinator who could help interested members fill in the registration over the phone and then identify groups of people that would connect well. Grocery Delivery While some of our Vision Mates are already delivering pre-ordered groceries for their matches, we're looking to identify a few people in communities across Nova Scotia who would be willing to pick up and drop off pre-ordered groceries for people who don't have anyone else. Guest Speaker The CNIB Foundation is seeking partnerships with museums, wellness professionals, and other experts to offer our members one-time presentations over Zoom Meetings and teleconference calls. These presentations would be 25 - 45 minutes in length, be interested and relevant to people living with sight loss, and would be offered to people across the country. *** Next Steps Interested in volunteering for one of these positions? Head to the Join the Team page to fill out a Volunteer Interest form. Want more information? Email jeff.deviller@cnib.ca and he'd be happy to answer any of your questions!

Become a RISE Ambassador - Community awaits!

Organization: Apathy is Boring

Description: Have you always wanted to create change in your community? Do you want to connect with young people in your city? Are you interested in gender inclusion?  We got you! If you're a youth aged 18-30, apply to join Apathy is Boring's RISE program starting in the fall 2020. Apathy is Boring is a national, youth-led organization that supports youth to become change-makers in their everyday lives and communities.   Our RISE program is designed for young people with little or no previous experience in volunteering. Yet! Over the course of 22 weeks as a RISE Ambassador, you will develop skills, learn about community engagement, and work with your peers to build something meaningful together. RISE is currently offered in the cities of Halifax, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Montreal, Edmonton, Ottawa and Toronto. To apply, visit this link: https://www.apathyisboring.com/join_rise  DEADLINE IS JUNE 1ST - APPLICATIONS VIA OUR WEBSITE ONLY  The theme of the RISE cohort starting in the fall 2020 is Gender Inclusion. For us, gender inclusion is about understanding and working to remove the barriers faced by folks with marginalized gender identities (i.e. two-spirit, trans, non-binary, women, etc). Working towards gender inclusion involves the engagement of all genders and allies. In RISE, you don't need to be an expert. You just have to be open to learning. All are welcome to apply!  The RISE program will run for 22 weeks from August 3, 2020 to December 14, 2020. The mandatory (and fun!) 4 day retreat is from August 30, 2020 to September 2, 2020, all expenses paid.  Youth ambassadors have to commit 6 hours a week, which includes a weekly 3 hour meeting one evening per week in your city.

It is the duty of youth to bring its fresh powers to bear on Social progress. Each generation of young people should be to the world like a vast reserve force to a tired army. They should lift the world forward. That is what they are for.
