Caregiver Support and Discussion (Compassion Fatigue)

This month’s guest is Caroleann Simmons who will share information with us on the issue of compassion fatigue, which refers to the emotional, physical and spiritual exhaustion that helpers can experience when caring for those in chronic emotional and physical pain. Compassion fatigue can impact helpers’ personal and professional lives with symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, intrusive imagery, loss of hope, exhaustion and irritability. Compassion fatigue is a normal consequence of caring for others over a long period or in intense situations. The best strategy to address compassion fatigue is to develop excellent self-care strategies, as well as an early warning system that lets the helper know that they are moving into the caution zone.
