Thursdays, January 12 to March 16, 2017 (10 weekly meetings) 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Room B400, lower level, Killam Library (please see exceptions below for session 2 and 10) Meditation is a technique for personal learning that has been practiced all over the world since the dawn of time. All cultures have some form of meditation and it is most often an integral part of their society. This course on Meditation will offer some insight into the vast world of meditation. This 10 session course will utilized three styles of meditation: 1. Guided (external direction) 2. Guided (self-directed) 3. Detachment (The Traditional Technique) Class Format: Each class will begin with a “guided” meditation for approximately 10 minutes. This will be followed by a 40 minute presentation on a related topic. The class will end with a 10 minute traditional silent meditation. (Detachment) Session Topics: Session One – Ancient approaches to meditation Session Two – Western analysis of meditation (Room 224, Student Union Building) Session Three – Relaxation response Session Four – Left/Right brain balance Session Five – Frequencies of the brain Session Six – Endocrine system Session Seven – Cranial / Sacral Response Session Eight – Nervous system circuits Session Nine – Introduction to deep breathing Session Ten – Developing your personal practice (Room 224, Student Union Building) Meditation Postures and Preparation: There are many different approaches to meditation postures. In this course all meditations will be done seated in a chair. Floor techniques will not be introduced in the course. This course makes no assumption about your knowledge and experience with meditation. Please come to the session with a “beginners’ mind,” open and questioning.
