Opportunity Description:

Volunteer Job Description: Position: Volunteer Tutor/Mentor Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator Hours of Work: We are currently recruiting volunteers for 1-2 Hours a week during the school year (Sept-June). Sessions are an hour long each and run Mondays-Thursdays at 3:30pm and 4:45pm Basic Qualifications: Previous experience working with youth 13-18 is considered an asset. A passion for helping and supporting young people with their education is a must. Must be comfortable working both one-on-one and in small groups (up to 5 students) within a larger group setting assisting with academic tasks (homework, assignments, projects) related to core subjects such as Math, Science, English Language Arts, Social Sciences, French, Business etc. Must be able and willing to complete a criminal declaration form and submit to a Child Abuse Registry Search. Position Profile: Pathways to Education Spryfield reduces poverty and its effects by lowering the dropout rate among high school students from economically disadvantaged communities. Pathways works to increase high school graduation rates and help youth pursue post-secondary education and/or find meaningful employment. The role of the Pathways Tutor is to provide academic support and to engage in positive role modelling for youth during program time. Tutors work with youth on a weekly basis and provide homework and academic support when needed. Requirements: • Provide academic and homework support in various core subjects such as Math, Science, English Language Arts, Social Sciences, French etc. • A passion for helping and supporting young people with their education and encouraging them to reach their academic goals • Ability to demonstrate professionalism by being a strong leader, enforcing and abiding by rules and policies, setting boundaries and ensuring the safety of youth at all times • Participate and help to facilitate workshops and mini-modules during programming as a means of further engaging and supporting youth • Endeavour to understand challenges participants face in school; a familiarity with “youth at risk” and knowledgeable of the effects of poverty • Take part in setting up and cleaning up programming space • Participate in debriefing session after Academic Support session with Pathways staff and other volunteers • An ability to problem solve with youth and adapt academic programming to meet the needs of participants • Keep Pathways staff updated on successes and difficulties during programming • Be friendly, but not friends (do not exchange gifts or personal information with young people) • Maintain a clean, safe, and structured environment for youth, volunteers and staff   If you would like more information, or to apply, please contact Sarah Bray (Volunteer Coordinator) at sarah@chebuctoconnections.ca or by phone/text 902-818-4089
